Because, as Ory stated, pop-anthems are for newbs just being exposed to EDM. So many non-EDM listeners hear that stuff, shrug and walk away thinking that's 'underground techno' and accept that it's not their cup-of-tea.

What they failed to realize is there are bundles of other genres that include the playfullness, breakbeats, funkiness and hooks they would warm up to quicker and be looking for at a party.

You're generally going to get a better response from this particuar type of crowd with house/jungle.

Another CD that would be great because it spans the board with mainly funky house, but drops of acid techno, some jungle and even some Corsten & Tiesto tracks is Richard Humpty Vission's 'Damn that DJ Made My Day'. Every person I've given that CD to has gone bonkers.

great songs, but not quite anthems. I cant remember the last time I was at a club dancing away to Suburban Train on the dance floor.

You need some funky house or garage to keep thigs moving. The mixes by beatfreakers someone suggested earlier are pretty good, or just grab an Ibiza Dance Parade cd or something that will keep things poppin. Good Luck.

system-j's right, you have to decide what type of trance or EDM you like the most yourself. Experiment, try new stuff, and in no time you'll find something that suits you.

the best way to start is going to some different online radio stations and sampling different genres to see which you like best.
www.di.fm has quite a few channels playing various genres of EDM, so be sure to check that out.

And once you decide on a genre you like most... hunt like a dog until you find more of it.

I remember years ago when I got into EDM, allmusic.com became a god-send.
Completely cross-referenced music profiles of artists and genres. You can read the history of each genre, get multiple page bios on artists you typically get a paragraph blurb on with other sites. You'll quickly get a good 'big picture' of EDM including most of the key albums and artists of each style. It's a lot more user-friendly and much more informative in general for a beginner than Discogs is.
Check it out.

It's tough understanding the EDM scene as a whole when you live in the states. I've been into trance and the surrounding genres for 3 or 4 years now and I feel I am just now getting a grasp on things...

True.
Also, there's a limit to what you'll learn just from reading on the internet and downloading mixes.

I know quite a few EDM geeks that won't go to parties. And I find that their grasp on things is very limited even though they've been highly envolved in the music for years.

There's nothing that can replace a number of years of going to parties and being exposed to the artists you love and the new artists you don't know. Their performances in a live situation have a greater degree of evangelizing you to expand your musical tastes and initiate a hunger for new styles you don't normally listen to.

And contrary to some people's thinking, EDM does have faces, hands and personalities behind it that can only be fully experienced by seeing the artists live. And yes, sometimes you have to drive 12 hours to see them. But it's definitely worth it if you're in love with this music.

Just go to your local CD shop and buy DJ Sammy's album.
