cool, i'll check it out when I get home tonight...I didn't give it that big of a look when I tried to link them a while back....it's possible I missed a connection that was actually mounted on the motherboard.

It does not have an ATA connection....I checked. Stupid freaking DELL, last time I got a dell it was full of expansion slots and all kinds of wonderful things. Right now, I've got room for an a:\ drive, a couple additional USB connections, and one more of the SATA hard drives. Looks like my old music collection will be lost forever....

you mean some sort of adapter? I didn't know they exsisted, and if they do, I don't own one. In which case I'll have to go out and buy one.

I'm not sure what the problem is with your computer, but generally you can easily connect two computers using crossover cable, and then transfer data from one to the other.

It only costs about $10-45 depending on the length.

warning: don't use regular ethernet cable... that will fry both motherboards

my problem is this:
I'm trying to get the music out of my old computer onto my new one. I had two hard drives on the old, and now have moved all my music onto one of them. I want to move that hard drive into my new computer to get all the music off it, but the connections with the motherboard on the new computer are now incompatible. [My new computer doesn't have an ATA connection for my hard drive, only the new SATA ones, as I'm told the acronyms are]

Networking doesn't work, as I've done a shitload of work trying to get them to establish a local area connection and even microsoft themselves can't figure out what's wrong, especially since my windows O/Ss aren't even pirated.

I've heard of a 'serial connection' between two computers using priner ports, but I haven't done any research into connecting them in this method.

I'm not willing to burn 30 gigs worth of CDs to get this music off either.

Any ideas?

EDIT
so this 'crossover cable' connects directly to the motherboards of both computers and acts generally as a newtork without having to do all the messy annying setup XP likes to put me thru?

Yeah, you can get a switch box for this and some cables. Kind of pricey.

There is also a device called a KVM (stands for keyboard, video, mouse) switch that allows you to use multiple computers with one set of monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
