LOL LOL LOL, here I am some months ago :P, well man, I will tell you in september if I can survive just with my Album, but I really doubt it, the thing that prolly will make me survive and to be a full time Producer is to make music for documentaries, Ambient Soundtrack is 500&800, for something totally orchestral 1000&1500 but I doub I can find one every month.

The best comparison I can give about labels is that labels are a lot like chicks.

Even if you're no mack daddy, there's always at least one chick out there for you. She may not be the best looking, but she appreciates you more than any other woman does.

Someone who does get a lot of chicks has something going for him that does interest them. He may be very attractive, he may have a lot of money, he may be very romantic, or he may tell girls exactly what they want to hear. Any of these qualities will make you a chick magnet. Hot chicks attract other hot chicks. If a hot chick sees you're with a hot chick, that shows the other hotties that you know how to get with them, therefore creating competition. The more chicks you have the more you have to choose from.

Same way with labels... even if you're not the mackdaddy hot fire skills producer, there's always at least one label out there for you. It may not be the biggest, but that label may appreciate your music more than any other one does.

Someone who does get a lot of labels interested in their music has something going for him. He may be a very skilled producer, he may have a lot of money, or he may tell the labels exactly what they need to hear. Any of these qualities will make you a label magnet. Big labels attract other big labels. If a big label see's your with another one, that shows the other big label you're skilled enough or know how to get with big labels, therefore creating competition. The more labels you have interested in your music, the more you have to choose from.

Notice there are more qualities than being a skilled producer. That's why there's a lot of crap being released. The artist may have present an alterior quality to the label that maybe isn't so musical, but one that will sell and that the label would invest their time and money into.

Dude...this is such a funny way to look at labels haha...

as said by kopi, its not very likely u will be making a living with just doing releases on mp3 and vinyl. You should be happy if u even make money from your first releases (which is what i am hoping for myself as well). As Kopi also said, doing stuff like documentaries, if u are good at that at least, will make u more money. And sometimes doing remixers for the bigger labels will make u quite some money as well, but u have to be quite a big name then already.

sounds like the smart move would be to make documentaries and save the extra 500-1500 for the music.

Quite true though. The trance scene out there is so sad, I don't know if I should laugh or cry. So many "artists" out there are signed and famous, because they are great producers, but unfortunately have less soul to put into their music than GWBush has compassion for communist muslims who sleep with his daughters. Still, they're on big labels and so their shit sells. The thing is, if you get with a "hot chick", all the DJs out there, will play your shit, cause you hot chick flashes her eyelashes and you're set. I've sent out material to top jocks and labels who haven't even returned my calls, let alone spun the tracks. But when they've become signed and the label sends them out...

"ooh, could this be the new TRACK OF THE WEEK? I THINK SO!!! TOP STUFF, DEFINATE CLASS, WILL CANE THIS!"

Oooook.

There are ofcourse less evil labels, but basically if you want a fair deal out of your signing, you'd better get to know the people you're hooking up with, cause it's much easier on the conscience to screw someone over whom you don't know. That's why girls who are intimidated by other girls, either go all catty straight off, or try to become best friends so they can be catty behind their backs. What you want is the catty straight on person, whom you can confront, straight off... or if you're lucky enough, a hot chick who isn't catty. Are we still talking about labels?

Anyhoo... were were we? Basically, if you want to get signed today, the best way of doing that, is not being at all innovative. Give the labels exactly what they have, but with a different melody, and you'll be set. That's the reason we're getting so many shite producers and tunes out there today, because it's so easy to just copy everyone else in the desperate attempt to get signed. You need lots of drive (the more the better), a super-simple hook (preferably just the "hoo" cause a "hook" might be a bit too complex), decent to good production skills (no you don't need to know shit about music, as long as you can make the production sound clean, or cleanish if you've got enough drive) and a complete lack of artistic integrity. If you've got that, then you're set to become the next big thing to hit the trance scene. Then email Armada or some Armada-wannabe-label started by any of the billion bedroom DJs out there who want to use their label to make it big as DJs and producers.

A cynic, me? Puhleease...

you can make music with the dancefloor in mind and produce stuff with nice hook and lots of drive without losing integrity...
