I have found that :

A) lots of reverb on things

and

B) lots of shit going on at the same time

Makes for a more "normal" sounding choon. Just whacked a load of reverb on all my percussion samples and it made them blend into the tune instead of standing out as they did before. Also lots of bassline stuff happening seems to help fill the sound out more.
