Um, you can definitely tell a story without vocals. That's kinda a no-brainer in my opinion. Another +1 to Spirit5.

I mean why is this music the way it is if it's not following a certain story. This story doesn't neccessarily have to be a traditional story, but something that flows as such as it creates images and intense feelings and has a theme or purpose. I think there have been CDs out there that have this, such as "Involver" that I mentioned in an earlier post, and many other CDs from the biggest DJs like Armin (Universal Religion in my opinion does), Tiesto's ISOS and Magik series, and many others. I take it this way, I got in to alot of this kind of music not just by the early artists I got into like BT and PvD, but from some video game music. Noteably there was this amazing soundtrack to the original "Unreal". The music was a mixture of ambient and melodic trance, but this was back in 1998. The music sounded orchestral too, but it was mostly eletronic. Anyways it really added to the game's overall feeling of being on another planet. I actually started playing the game more for the music than anything else really..well the pretty graphics too.

I don't think of Trance in the same vein as hip hop. This has been debated more but a lot of "mainstream" hip hop is targeted through it's lyrics and the beats to be "booty shaking music". Sure there's the deeper hip hop stuff, but the vast majority that gets airplay is the stuff played in clubs. Trance is on a whole nother level. I see it's potential to be much more, much deeper as it is. I see it as someone else noted..it's for your head, not just your body. Why make it beautiful and ethereal sounding if it's following doesn't embrace it as such? This doesn't mean have a bunch of hippie followers, but maybe trance does need more philosophy and spirituality integrated into it to compliment it's intense beauty and emotions.

I Totally agree with you Spirit and DJ Roko I think you really live and feel trance music.
Trance it's Beyond just Dancing.
When i listen to trance It's not only external Dancing, I tell people I'm dancing in my head, it's a whole world of emotions that you experience and it can goes far beyond "Lyrics".

As you say in clubs people are ther emore often to only dance, party and have a drunk night, but for me the Trance epxerience it's much more than that, and that's the reaosn why i lvoe this music so much.

I suffer (Don't knwo is say suffer, coz I catually i love to have this) Synaesthesia, and I have visions and I can See sounds with music (Shapes, colors), some people say trance is the same bum bum bum, but actually I see it as the more diverse music, I can see how the sounds (Shapes, Colors) grow up, the color get intense with the frequency changes and there are always new things coming in, it is extremely beautiful.
and in my case that's why I feel that sounds describes the sotry much better than lyrics.
"A Vision tells you more, than 100000000 words"

A Good DJ goes far beyond Beat-matching, the most important thing its the track selection, wich creates the journey, and that's what makes a dj noticeable to people.

I have cry many times of happines, ina common day ic an be in my car alone, listenign to the music, and suddenly I just canīt stand so many things and emotiosn coming to my mind, that I burst into tears of happines, and just keep smiling.

People that say trance it's just for dancing, they are setting boundaries for their experience, or are mentally limited. they are far away from experience the real meaning of this music.

Trance gets the "real" listener hypnotised (And I read this in the Encyclopedia), some people are more vulnerable to get hypnotised ( I don't know why), and some are not able to do this.
If you don't believe me , go ask an xpert in hypnosis and they will tell you the truth. but i think with time you can achieve it, I'm not sure abotu it.

My Final Statement

"MUSIC GOES FAR BEYOND dancing"

the first time i mushroomed i listened to the first northern exposure cd and i thought it told a story. but uh.... i was trippin'. every time i'm on psychadelics, i think the music tells me a story. a fucked up, nonsensical story.

so, in my opinion, if you're part of the audience and you think the dj is telling a story, well more power to you. if you're there to dance, great. who cares right?
