In the 80’s VJs were hosts of music video television shows. Now a VJ is a video artist creating their own images and mixing them live at nightclubs and concerts. Demand for VJs is skyrocketing in Toronto with the DIGITAL VISUALISTS being one of the most sought after companies in the city. Performing live on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 as the sight experience of CONTACT @ SYSTEM with MISS KITTIN, the DIGITAL VISUALISTS are also the inventors who created a video machine that plays like a musical instrument.
The DIGITAL VISUALISTS are Laura Austen and Jamie Lopez. Founded in 2003, both were already doing video work, Austen in Toronto and Lopez in Argentina where he started VJ’ing at raves and clubs in 1989. Lopez is also the man who invented the award winning BRASH Live media server (www.brash.com) -- a machine that not only allows the duo to mix video but also synthesize imagery in real time.
“It’s like we are playing a musical instrument that produces images,” explains Austen. “We take the crowd into a visual journey, we can excite them, make them think, or simply let the beat take over and merge music and visuals into one entity....I think this is the future not only in the night clubs but in every form of audiovisual performance from Rock Concerts to a DJ set.”
The work is like a digital painting moving in time with the music, and the DIGITIAL VISUALISTS are among the best in their field. They’ve performed for internationally renowned DJs like Tiesto, Danny Tenaglia, Lee Cabrera, Bad Boy Bill as well as the infamous Ultramar festival in 2005. Tiesto loved them so much he took Lopez and the BASH Live system on tour with him.
Crowds love their work as much as the DJs do. People talk about them on messages boards trying to find out who the artists are behind the amazing visuals they are watching mixed live. DIGITAL VISUALISTS are definitely a modern day artists making some wonder if video is the new painting. If this is true, are clubs going to be the new gallery?
