After the break it was a mild culture shock getting back to work, and following my final 2005 visit to Benidorm (Weds), I flew to Scandinavia on Thursday Aug 26th. I was heading for a party on board a large ferry travelling from Stockholm to Turku in Finland. Dj’s on the night in two rooms were Dave Clark, Phil Kieron, Justin Robertson, Alex Kunnari, Eddie Halliwell and myself.
I’ve dj’d on occasional boat parties, including events in London, Miami and Ibiza, but this was no piffling boat- it was one of the largest car ferries in the world. Each dj had his own cabin, although my pre dj’ing disco nap was badly disturbed by the 1500 Swedish clubbers having their own mini parties in adjacent cabins. I could hear every bar and chord of Tiesto’s “Just Be” album from next door.
Because it was pitch black outside during my 1.30-4am set I almost forgot we were on a giant ship. The constant rocking from side to side helped jog my memory, and the sensation made me feel as though I’d drunk three times as much alcohol as I actually had. Although I’ve played on a number of occasions in Finland, Norway and Denmark, this was my first appearance before Swedish clubbers, and the atmosphere was fantastic.
At 8am we docked in Turku, and I was loudly woken by Eddie Halliwell’s brother Simon hammering on my cabin door. We were coached the 160kms back to Helsinki for the djs’ various flights home. It was the first time I’ve met Dave Clark, and he’s a ‘character’ to say the least.
