To say you cannot call a genre progressive because of other genres like progressive rock is a little bit silly. The term progressive in regards to the genre has evolved out of the conglomeration of different music styles. I don't know about you but if I had to put the word progressive in front of whatever genre I was speaking about I would tend to talk less... think of "progressive breaks, "progressive epic hardcore deep trance", meh.
The term came about from progressive house and progressive trance filtering together to create the sound now known as progressive. A good example of this would be the Humate remix of Schiller - Ruhe. You cannot really put it specifically into prog house or prog trance because it exhibits characteristics of both genres.
Humans tend to be lazy when it comes to speaking, hence acronyms and the likes. So is it really that surprsing that one umbrella name is used to cover alot of the bases? Plus since the term progressive is a non limiting name you can bring in other styles such as breaks without creating another fuckin sub-genre.
At least that is how I look at it... (plus I'm sure after I hit submit I will find a flaw in my writing or remember something else...)
Now a little disclaimer.. THE FOLLOWING IS MY OWN SUBJECTIVE OPINION AND IN NO WAY AM I PUTTING DOWN THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS.
The question is progressive vs trance. I am a full on prog and techno head with an obvious love for trance still (why else would I be here?) However I hardly listen to trance anymore, why is that? Because since I have been partying for quite along time, I have heard alot of music, further developed my dancing style and have narrowed my preferences just due to the fact that I have been invloved with the scene for an extended period of time. I feel that my taste in music has matured a bit, I no longer care for large buildups that make everyone toss their hands in the air (when out dancing, at home is a different story), I prefer a beat that just keeps chugging along with interspersed melody and other stuff to keep my interest. I prefer that because once I settle in to a groove when dancing I don't like to lose my beat, normally when a buildup happens at a club or party I tend to just stand their with my hands on my hips waiting for it to finish so I can get back to dancing. To me progressive just has a more mature, deeper sound that I can identify with. I mean I love AVB's new cd "In Motion 3" but thought his set at Sonic State was boring as fuck, it didn't seem to have any direction and I didn't care for it at all(holy shit, can't believe I wrote that, people are gonna hate me)
So I love progressive, and I love trance, and I love techno.
What is my point? I guess it is that I prefer progressive however there really isn't any answer since it comes down to preference... but thats the beauty of a message board, being able to talk about nothing.
