I havent seen that many internationals myself PVD, Ferry Corsten, Tall Paul, Danny Howells, Steve Strangis etc. The vibe can be just as good with a local gig. But let's face it most internationals ARE internationals because they are the best in the field.

This combines with the thread about Fat Boy Slim playing Summadayze. Most people just want to say they have seen him play even though any Melbourne DJ is 20 times better than he is (excluding Papa Smurf). I guess it's to add to their CV of dance music......

all internationals are locals somewhere.

they were dj bumfuck idaho's.

they did something right that appealed to people. they wrote some awesome music - or they consistently rocked clubs/raves...

they made people ask 'who is that?' (which is a pretty hard thing as a dj)

they got a foot in and kept pushing - to the point were promoters (the people deep into the music) from all over the world wanted to book em.

they travelled and they rocked the towns where they played - people in those towns remembered their name. their sound is universally good. so they get invited back.

if a dj is a dj is a dj then how did the whole 'superstar dj' thing start in the first place?

thats all very true jpl, but do those facts mean that you enjoy them any more? im sure there are plenty of internationals you wouldnt pay your hard-earned money to go see coz you think theyre crap

i just think that im lucky. as long as a DJ can beatmatch and (preferably, tho not essential) mix harmonically, i can sit there and listen to them for hours, and not really give a fvck about anything else going on, or whether their name is DJ soups or tiesto van buuren.

When someone acheives world-wide fame, it's generally for a reason. I mean look at the Aussies who have gone international: Anthony Pappa, Kasey Taylor, Phil K etc. (you could probably throw Chable in there too, although that was mainly for producing). These guys aren't headline internationals through luck or good promoting (although that undeniably helps) but because they were a cut above the rest of the other locals. If that's how it works here, then I'd like to think that the internationals coming out here from other nations are doing so because they too are the best their country has to offer. I mean, no disrespect to our locals, but good luck finding a local with the DJing calibre of jocks like James Zabiela, Richie Hawtin, John Digweed, Danny Howells and so forth. There just isn't anyone else in the world like them, simply because they are amazing DJs whose reputation is solely based on just how fucking good they are. We're blessed with some top class locals down here (in Melbourne at least) but it doesn't change the fact that there are international DJs out there who just happen to be a cut above the rest.

Of course it doesn't always work that way. A lot of DJs have made it big through production and can sell-out gigs on the basis of how well their name is recognised, not how well they play out. Similarly, some DJs may have become big for a reason, but lost the plot after a while to the point where their reputation exceeds their current abilities (I'll let someone else mention Tiesto here... ). Nonetheless, regardless of the international, you're pretty much guaranteed to hear music that you wouldn't be able to here (either because of access to ultra-new records or because the predominant musical styles are much different where they come from than they are down here), you're guaranteed a great atmosphere and you're pretty much guaranteed that it's gonna be the only chance you get to see this DJ for at least 12 months. Even if the DJ isn't any more talented (in terms of mixing / track selection etc.) than the locals, I'd still say that this is reason enough to fork out an extra couple of bucks to go see them.

no i dunt blow money on dj's i have heard in the past and dont enjoy that much - tiesto is a perfect example - saw him at salt years ago - he was mindblowing...so next coupla time he came down i paid to go see him - he went a bit to the shitter and i stopped paying money to see him. simple.

of course there are awesome locals that you can see everyweek for cheeps and i do - but yeah im not fussed about paying a little (or a lot) more to see a guy who has werked very hard, and travelled thousands of kilometers to come and play.

i generally agree fellas. but like i said, i couldnt tell the difference between digweed & jpl to be honest and i prob have lower standards than most of you kiddies. just put together 3 hrs of uplifting trance and im happy is why GTR sucked balls, whereas 5AM rocked it
