That is True, it depends also on the rip,
for example, if you get a Vinyl rip at 320 kbps, and a Cd-rip 192 kbps, the cd-rip at 192 kbps will sound better than the vinyl rip at 320 kbps.

now if you get a good cd-rip at 320 kbps and another one at 192 kbps, with the same (Ripping Qualities), I personally can not tell the difference.

Maybe it could have differences, but as the graphic shows, it is very slightly for the human ear, and that depends also on the song, because I know certain parts of the song doesn't need that much of a bit-rate and some need higher bitrates, that's why the VBR (Variable Bit-rate)exists.

This isn't necessarily true though...it just depends on the equipment being used. There are more chains in the link for vinyl ripping (needle, cartridge, preamp, soundcard) ...which is why there is more bad vinyl rips out there then cd rips. However, if the person has the right equipment, a 320kbps vinyl rip would most definitely sound fuller then a 192kbps cd rip.

i still prefer 320kbps mp3s if i can (vinyl first still though)...something just doesn't sound right when you play a 192kbps mp3 on a loud system.

I understand what you said Binkun about the vinyl rips, and I think you are right, it is just than in general cd-rips are better, because to make a real good vinyl rip, I think you have to be a Pro in ripping and have very good equipment as you mentioned before.

the absolute minimum bitrate for club use is 256k. 320k and wav are very hard to distinguish between unless the system is decent, which most are nt...

why waste time and money with 192k when you can get 320k for a little more? just remember when you had to buy vinyl if you wanted upfront new releases.. @ £6-7 quid for an import! it makes that extra 50p-£1.00 for 320k a great deal if you ask me!

I know not many people are this stupid but at a house partie once a dj was playing what sounded like a song compressed at max 96k that he obviously downloaded off kazaa or something and just about no-one could tell the difference. That just gives you an idea how much the general public around my area know about music.

Yes, but the soundsystem at a house party is quite different from a 20k Funktion One rig in a club designed to sound nice.

At high volumes, a low-bitrate mp3 will really hurt your ears.

anyways, my question is: is it legal to play purchased mp3's in clubs? does the club need to have a certain license? is it different from country to country? I have emailed a few mp3-stores, but without any responses. I'd like to know this because It would be much better for my economy to play mp3's instead of 12"'s anymore..

It depends on the country. In most countries it is required that the club has a licence for music to be played in public. From what I've read, this is beginning to be enforced in the UK, and inspectors drop in on clubs to note which music is played and check the licensing.

In the UK they are trying to set up a separate licence for people who play digital tunes and the proposed licence is regarded as unfair and a rip-off so who knows what will happen to it.

In Italy it is apparently not allowed to play MP3s or any copied media in public (even copies that are paid downloads or considered legal backups in other countries). There was a DJ there who was hit with a huge fine, but he had pirated a lot of music.

wow, what bigatry. that's idiotic. so, in order to be sure of that you're playing legal stuff, you'd have to check it out with the club first? as for every club should have that license over here (sweden) and not two separate ones.

you can 'feel' a 320kbit alot more in a club than a 192. that plays a big factor in clubs if you ask me.

ive noticed that the lower the bitrate is, the more the codec acts like a low-pass filter (lower bitrate means coding of the lower frequencies only). the 320kbps mp3s clearly play the highs, while the 192kbps smudge them a little. lower than 192kbps is not acceptible for djing. i usually make a +1.5 - +2.0 db high gain, so the highs in the 192kbps mp3s sound clearer.
now i know that ppl are gonna say that mp3 is no good for djing, but im not going to discuss that matter. you try living in Ukraine, and ill see if you earn enough money to buy licensed 320kbps mp3, vinyl or cd. don't tell me illegal mp3 sucks - its obvious, but what would YOU do being a zero-budget tranceaddict? ide go to the very UK, GER and NL and put a stack of cash right in the hands of PvD, AvB, B&J is i had em....sad story. now its time to get whipped to death..
