Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself. - Timothy Leary

Well its official the single "Vicarious" leaked on the internet today. I've already heard it about 20 times and Ive got to say that it is fkn amazing, so intense, so visceral. Maynard's vocals sound like they are coming from somehwere desperate like he has something to get off his chest.
The entire band took it up to the next level, which is no surprise. Adam and Justin are experimenting with some new things and Danny's drumming is unrelenting. I cant wait till the entire album comes out May 2nd

I agree that Vicarious does have some Schism influence in it along witha bit of Meshuggah as well. All I know is that I liked it and can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
For the most part the people who have not liked it have been the ones with really really high expectations and when the single came out and didnt meet those expectations, they were immediately dissapointed.
I believe that the lyrics will be more direct this time. Maynard said it himself in an interview the whole global consciousness thing didnt work so now he is experimenting with more personal things. Things that are more close to home. According to Adam in his GW interview: "the attitude on the last record was very "healing" very "think for yourself" the attitude on this record is more about putting people in their place." So they are pissed again.

I wouldn't say I dislike it. To be honest, it's pretty much exactly what I was expecting. Nevertheless, I still think Lateralus is the greatest album ever made by anyone, so I'd have to say I fall into the group that loves 'Reflection,' rather than in the one of people who don't (I can't think of any other track they've made that has such a clear-cut difference of opinion between the two general camps of TOOL fans), so that "healing" approach is the one that got me hooked, and I hope they don't completely abandon it in favor of, in the words of a good friend of mine upon first hearing it, "A Perfect TOOL," though that's where it sounds like they're heading...and yeah, there is a significant amount of Meshuggah rip-off there.

I got to agree with you Lateralus is the best TOOL album ever period. I know that you didnt dislike Vicarious I read that in your other post. I was merely talking about the majority of other people who didnt like it.
TOOL always tend to lose and gain fans with every release. I remember when Lateralus came out and some said TOOL went "soft" and a lot of people dont like the political undertones in Vicarious which is funny cause to me TOOL has always been somewhat political. I for one Im glad that they are trying to deliver a message about our society and our current times. Anyway for all we know this could all be a lalalalalalie the track might not even be on the album. At this point I just want the album to be released so that all the speculation can end once and for all.
