I'm not sure what you expect anyone can 'do' about the current state of the scene man. Time after time I have to repeat myself about how there isn't a single club/venue in Vancouver that is... A.) available on a Friday or Saturday night... B.) that has suitable equipment and lighting for a respectable level of production. No offence man, but I've been trying to think of a solution to this problem all year! The only option I've come up with (a Friday) is a gamble at best, and you guessed it... will also require a nice chunk of change. Not to mention that I would have to gurantee a turnout of 400+ people. I'd be more than happy to fill anyone in with the details, although it's not something I would like to broadcast over the net. If anyone else can find a club where I can bring an out of town DJ to on a Saturday night, please let me know.
Good night |
i don't expect a SINGLE person to change anything entirely on their own, especially over-night.
danny, i will admit that i am not a promoter. i obviously don't have the experience you do in this field, but if all we're going to do is sit on our butts and twirl our thumbs, you think change is going to be on the way? definitely not. and if you're content with that, thats alright. so be it, but it doesn't mean that everyone else are content with it.
if some people want to get together and do something, ANYTHING, small parties, smaller productions, at least there is something to hang on to and you can try to build from there. otherwise, there really is no hope for anything.
the questions i have are why not start small? why does everyone always have to think BIG? big venues, big name dj's is all i seem to hear but whats wrong with small local nights? the focus is on VANCOUVER's scene, not holland, not germany, not uk. i have been to quite a few parties this year, seeing many international superstar dj's and here's my true honest opinion, most are only as good as their un-released promos and a name.
danny, i don't disagree with you that this scene here is SHIT. but if people want to try something to help the trance scene grow, i don't see why there should be all sorts of negativity.
my 2 cents

I wasn't suggesting that any one person can change things either. But you're failing to see my point.
Obviously I'm not content sitting around 'twirling my thumbs'... hence my frustration.
Furthermore, I'm not trying to be negative. Small shows are great for new DJs to play at etc., but let's get real. Nobody except a few TA's or your friends is ever going to come out to these type of nights during the week. So in a sense this isn't really doing anything for the 'scene' either, it's just giving you a place to play your music which is fine, good for you!
My goal as a promoter and DJ is to be innovative, and help the scene move forward. We have diffrent views of what a small show is, that much is obvious. What I'm trying to say that we need a place on weekends with a good atmosphere where we can bring in less known DJs that trance enthusiasts will enjoy, and at the same time expose new people to this music!
As for your comment about big name DJs, I totally agree with you! We're at a point in time where lots of people can play sets equally as well as the big names, this is true in Vancouver and pretty much any other city in the world.
Unfortunately, the only thing everyone seems to be able to agree on is how much the scene sucks. The negativity in this forum definitely needs to stop, but people also need to realise the real issues which are a direct result of situations that are out of our hands. We need to work together to see what we can do adress these issues, until then nothing will change.
