Just a few that hadn't been mentioned.

Oh, and De La Soul! I know someone already mentioned them, but if you've never heard their music, you've been missing out. One of the best hip-hop groups of all time and my personal favorite.

I honestly think that most hip hop these days is quite piss poor.
Tru hip hop would be most stuff that came out in the early to mid nineties.
Most of artist s that represent the true hip hop sound are:

Dilated Peoples
Gangstarr
Imortal Technique
Last Emperor
Aesop Rock
Cunninglinguists
Jeru
KRS One
A Tribe Called Quest
Madlib
Rakim
Nas (most of his early shit)

and most of the early Wu Tang solo albums from artists such as:

Inpsectah Deck
RZA
Ghostface
Killah Priest
GZA
Raekwon

good to see fellow hiphop heads on the forums, and from what i see the guys that know about hiphop really do know about hiphop which is great!

lately i've been listening to a lot of mos def and gang starr as well as some of nas's old unreleased stuff

i should mention big l is one of my favourite artists (he was part of DITC) and also biggie. even though he was a bit on the commercial side, you just can't go past the dope 90's style beats he rapped over and his voice and wordplay just work so well.

What exactly constitutes "true" hip hop?

I don't know if Saul Williams is hip hop or rap, but I'm really lovin' this stuff right now. For those who aren't familiar, listen to the tune "Grippo."

I haven't really ventured forth past NWA, Tribe or KRS... maybe it's time to do so?

I think Q-Tip deserves a worthy mention as well. oh and can't forget Arrested Developments "Mr. Wendel!!!"

wtf.. when did skateboarding become a part of the hip hop culture? maybe i'm outta the loop but it sure wasnt hiphop 15 yrs ago.

anyway, try some classic albums like 'galleries' by visionaries and '93 til infinity' by souls of mischief.
