Richie is awesome, he plays a variety of styles, but primarily dark house or minimalistic!!

one word for richie hawtin: overhyped. i mean as a trance fan it's really funny to see how people are praising him all the time on techno boards, he really can't do anything wrong, for them he is god. he is their tiesto, except it's not allowed to bash him because they are so sure he's not in it for the money you will sure like him if you're into minimal, but you'll fall asleep if you like more banging techno.

One word: innovation.

OK, I wanted to see Richie at this event, but can't because of other commitments, but from listening his sets, I'm not pissed. For one, he'll be back. Second, I didn't really dig his style in the sets I've heard. If he plays like he does in the 2nd half of the Sven Vath/Richie Hawtin Essential Mix from November '02, I'm not pissed. It's way too sleepy for me to get on the floor to. It's more like what I'd crawl up next to some girl with at my apartment, not what I'd like to dance to.

I'd be interested in seeing him in the very near future to prove me wrong, though.

I guess you have to know the Belgian techno scene a bit to understand this, we're very spoiled here, lots of big names at various venues every weekend (and it's not like it's such a big country ). But if an international dj comes to Belgium more than 2-3 times a year, people start to bash them because they have already seen them (I think this is a ridiculous reason, who knows the dj plays a totally different set the next time).

Anyway, you never hear these kind of comments about Richie. I'm not saying he's not a good dj because he is (in his style), but some people worship him too much. OK he has done some innovative things in his career, but I've also heard sets from him that are filled with tracks like Murder Was The Bass and other very wellknown records. Those were good sets, not too bleepy or too minimal. But if someone like Monika Kruse plays the same stuff, the Belgian crowd (or at least the forum elitists) will call her a commercial whore.

I think this explains? Sorry if I bother you guys too much with this "Belgian problem", I hope it's not the same in other countries

well you compared Hawtin to Tiesto in terms of hype. Here's the difference, Hawtin deserves all that "hype" because he actually has something to prove for it. What has Tiesto done that's so innovating besides being the first DJ to immensely exploit himself. He dosen't deserve the hype.
