It doesn't have to be complicated or innovating, Painkiller wasn't and it was an awesome game, so was Serious Sam, both mindless fun.

see, i found serious sam awfully repetitive. i thought the ideas were there but the execution felt like i was playing a platformer on the master system

Care to explain what makes Doom 3 and Quake 4 so much better than F.E.A.R or Half Life 2? The only yawn's I got from the game was how easy it was, whereas with Quake I actualy fell asleep during the game. |
HL2: really enjoyed parts of it. and i thought the physics modelling was the best ive seen. and damn those water effects! even on my shitty system.
but fvck, i just found the overall game to be boring. i hate the weapons. those stupid fvcking little creatures that jump at you? i mean, fvck, do we HAVE to put up with them the whole fvcking damn game? there wasnt a story (tho thats not always a problem for me) yet tried to pretend it did. thought the enemies were all pretty uninspired. there was no atmosphere.
all the ID games imo have excelled at creating an atmosphere. doom 3 scared the fvck out of me and was the most intense gaming experience ive ever had (with the possible exception of massive Q3 LANs ). HL had gimmicks like "lets play on the big crane".
and dont get me started on STEAM
D3 was gorgeous, ran rock solid, and was good at what it set out to achieve. now of course graphics arent everything, but theres only so far for the boundaries of something like a shooter to go.
much of the stuff in HL2 felt arcadey & forced rather than innovative or clever (tho the lionbug thing bit was cool) and i guess i always felt as though i was playing a game instead of being totally immersed (which is the trait of a good game imo).
FEAR just wasnt for me, thought the engine was crap, the overall physics were ordinary and just didnt see anything that made me think it deserved its reputation. and the MP was abysmal. i might not have given it a long time to bond with me, but these days its an instant love em or hate em in the FPS world for me.
to be fair tho im probably just getting old and gaming is losing its lustre but for me i think ID/raven/activision (whomever did what) have achieved what they set out to do better than any of the competition.
