Don't you mean cracked-out-Asian-infested? In any case, it's still worth it in the end.
On topic (from a GTA perspective):
I'd say Trance is still underground. Mainstream society has no idea what Trance is. Others have heard the word, but still don't know what Trance is. Other people have heard Tiesto, but still don't know what Trance is.
It all depends on your definition of 'underground'. If you think underground is something that doesn't appeal to the masses, then Trance definitely fits the profile. If you think Underground music is music that is original and experimentational, then Trance isn't so underground after all.
As far as the 'all parties here are Trance, hence Trance is mainstream' argument: First, remember that you are part of the Trance 'scene', so obviously to you, it's gonna seem like all the parties are Trance, since the parties you go to are all Trance. I know there's a shitload of clubs in the GTA that only play Hip-Hop and RNB, and sometimes the odd House track here and there. If you took a survey of all the clubs in your city and what music is being spun in those clubs, I very much doubt that Trance would be the most popular one. Which brings us to my next point: Trance is dance music. I don't see how one can dance to Rock or Pop, so obviously the stuff being played in clubs is much more likely to be something Trance-y (and hence something danceable). That doesn't make Trance more mainstream than Rock.
Lastly, just because a few Trance tracks have made it to the top-40 charts doesn't make the whole genre mainstream. As with almost every music genre (I'm really wondering if Gangsta Rap has an underground scene, and if it does, does it consist only of the rappers who haven't hit it big just yet?), it has it's commercial parts, and it has it's underground parts. Trance has grown too big of a scene to be painted by just one brush - underground or mainstream. Yes, Tiesto can be considered mainstream, but Tiesto doesn't embody the whole Trance genre.
But in general, Trance is still underground. So all of you can stop worrying and continue listening to Trance purely because it's underground.
