who the fuck cares how big the screen on the laptop is.

a normal human should be able to carry it. not marvel at the size of the screen.

I just picked up one of the new Sony Vaio S-Series laptops 2 days ago.



Seems to be the perfect compromise between screen size (13.3" widescreen) and weight (4.3lbs).

I think this is a practical idea just like Malek said. The option to move it if you need/want to is great.

It's considered a desktop replacement not a notebook (marketting is getting away from the term laptop as they are not to be used on a person's lap due to heating issues).

I'm happy, quite happy actually, with my Acer Ferrari 3200. Bash Acer all you want but w/ the specs and the price I bought it for, not to mention the snazy Ferrari red covering and weight under 6lbs, I'm happy with my purchase.

A bit pricey at $2499, but not unusual for Sony. I'm much happier with the build quality of this than my previous Dell 600m (one of the hinges snapped on it a few days ago which is why I was in the market for a new one...)

LOL.... unfortunately, working in the financial industry, the Mac world still hasn't fully caught up with compatibility for programs / applications I need to use.

System so far is great. The 13.3" screen is a bit smaller than I'd want to use for my main system, but with an extra desktop or an add-on LCD to plug into it, the thing is working great. My main concern was that I wanted something big enough that it was useable, yet light enough and a decent size that I can take on a plane / go to business meetings. As I mentioned previously, this seems to be a nice compromise. The one thing that is a bit lacking on this system though is battery time. Sony rates it at 1.5-3 hours (surprisingly, it finally seems to be an honest identification of true battery time!) So far, I seem to be getting about 3 hours on average. Sony sells a higher capacity battery (good for about 5 hours or so), but it's in the neighbourhood of $350 which is definitely on the pricier side for an extended capacity battery!

While the ultra-light notebooks (i.e. 10" or so screens) are super light and have great battery time, I just can't imagine working off that screen for more than 20 mins at a time or so... would drive me crazy.

That's my biggest peeve with notebooks, too. LCD for display is definitely the way to go, I have a 19" on my desktop, so easy on the eyes. Anything less than a 15" on a notebook would annoy me all to hell too...

For now, I'll stick with my junker p3 laptop. Don't have to worry about it getting stolen/damaged, especially at clubs, etc.
