If that is "like a wide open door to the corporate world", then I am a little scared

You can make more than that working at McDonalds when you are 14 over here......

Crazy

haha yeh i was about to say this!

Australians get pretty good pay sometimes, even at the shittest jobs.

Rule of thumb when applying for jobs:

NEVER PUT DOWN YOUR SALARY REQUIREMENTS

Why?
You put down 7.50, they are willing to pay 11.50, and they see you only want 7.50 for this job so they'll pay you 8.50 which is above your requirement. Score for you, but you could have made 11.50

Alternatively,
You put down 8.50, they are willing to only pay 7.50, you're asking for too much for the position. They won't hire you.

A good thing about leaving your salary requirement open is to look at the job application process as a choice for you and a choice for them. A good applicant will have 5-6 offers from different companies (this puts you in the position to choose which job you want, how much pay, how hard the work is, how much success there is). Versus another applicant that will jump at any position available. You want to show all employers that you are the best candidate for the position, this will enable the employer a chance to "MAKE YOU AN OFFER" and you have the right to take it or leave it.

On one hand you have nothing else going for you so you'll take it fine. On the other hand you have nothing else going for you but you was expecting more money. Salary discussion comes always after they've made an offer to you. In other words, once they make an offer to you, you've got the job. Now you just need to figure out how much you are worth. Well like many things, I too was young and I too did jump at the first offer, but I've learned that this method is how people succeed. Remember, you are an asset to every company, every company is not an asset to you. Lateral Movement and Upward Mobility...read up on those business terms!

and for the record
I started working when I was in highschool full time after school 4pm-9pm @ a mom and pop computer store paying me 10/hr off the books cash. the owner of the shop eventually brought me into a fortune 500 sub-company of MSNBC (www.feedroom.com) as a network administrator/assistant (paid me $28/hr on the books). Now I'm a Senior Business Analyst/Sales Operations Manager @ a Fortune 500 Publishing Company.

Good luck, Congrats on the new job, and remember Be Successful but make sure you are happy at what you are doing!

Congrats again!!!

Good old Geographic Information systems, eh? I remember learning about them in Geography class at school.

Don't you have set minimum wages in the US?

Do you have "award" wages, which are the minimum wages for specific jobs or positions?

Hmm... with my new job I am on £10.42/hr before tax, which is $18.44/hour

Not too shabby for a 23 year old with no uni/college background

I'm on $17.50 an hour

I work as a casual in a liquor store. VERY easy job! Half the time, we just sit around and read the newspaper or throw a football around the carpark.

Yeah I like it... it's a no pressure environment... come, do the work and leave nobody breathes down your neck lol

min wages in the US are state-regulated
so every state has a different set min wage

In Massachusetts it's 6.75 I think, I might be wrong though

$13 US for that seem pretty sweet, I loved my old job back in 2003, £10/hour working in an internet cafe (with no manager).

I just sat on msn/TA all day and got paid for it

Me too.... except every once and a while I remember how I used to want to "stick it to the man" and then realize I now am the man.... it's a little strange.
