instead of taking route 17......
go through PA instead. It shouldn't take you more 7.5 hours.
I drive this about once every 2 months. I'll post my directions in a minute.
----------------------------------------------------------------
edit:
The route through NY, PA, NJ and back into NYC is by far the fastest. and the scenery in PA is nice anyway.
From Toronto your best bet is through niagra falls (401 to QEW). Once on the US side you'll want to take 90E to 81S (switch to 81 just after syracuse) take 81 to scranton.
after Scranton switch to 380
then get onto 80
80 will take you in through NJ
stay on 80 until you see the third or fourth exit for route 46 (80 and 46 cross over a bunch but the longer you stay on 80 the better since it is faster)
once you are on 46 stay on it until Clifton then switch onto route 3.
route 3 will take you directly to the lincon tunnel and into NYC.
*Note* 46 and 3 may seem odd to most since they are really built up shopping and express roads. they are highways and don't get distracted by the stupid* driving (* reads fun, if you are comfortable with nuttyness) and exits every 20 meters. stay in the middle lane as the slow lane is used for slowing down to exit and speeding up to enter the highway. (there are very short on and off ramps if any).
If in doubt as to which way to take a highway you pretty much only take them east or south, with the possible exception of the ring road around buffalo right after you cross, I forget that one and it depends on which border crossing you take so look into that, I find the nigagra falls crossing to always be a fairly good choice going down and lewiston coming back up (lewiston allows you to just stay right on 190 till the end at customs).
oh also try and avoid the part from route 80 into nyc section of your trip between the hours of 6:30am to 9:30am and 3:30pm to 7:30pm the traffic will easily add another hour onto your trip going either IN OR OUT of the city. You're almost better just getting off the highway and waiting... you'll get there the same time.
As for parking I have a house in Rutherford NJ (5 miles from times square NYC, it's right across the hudson river) My house is about 4 doors away from a major bus line into the city that runs 24 hours a day. The town is regarded as one of NJ's safest towns and the commuter line comes about every 15 minutes and costs around 1.75 each way. If you wanted to park at my place for free (sure beats NYC prices and damage from reckless parking! ) you'd be more than welcome to. The bus line goes right into port authority at 42nd street.
I hope this helps. Have a good trip. PM if you need more details.
Take care,
Dave
