A man is dead after gunfire broke out during a funeral service in Toronto's northwest end, sending 300 people running and ducking for cover.

In the Greater Toronto Area's 69th homicide this year, three shooters allegedly opened fire on the 18-year-old victim with semi-automatic weapons at an Etobicoke church at approximately noon Friday.

In a sad connection, the shooting happened during a funeral for another gunshot victim -- 17-year-old Jamal Michael Hemmings. He was shot Nov. 9 in an Eglinton Avenue West parking lot.

Police have begun a search for three suspects. They say they had no reason to expect violence during the funeral. If police had, said Chief Bill Blair, officers would have been present.

Blair said he believes the two murders are connected, noting the victims were friends. He called the shooting "appalling" during an afternoon news conference.

"The public nature of this violence demonstrates the callousness … some of these gang members have and the total disrespect they have for their community and for public institutions, like churches," said Blair. He added that he thinks the shooters' conduct is "shocking and surprising to us all."

Blair said that after this summer of violence he finds himself less and less surprised at the levels to which some gang members will descend. He also called for witnesses to come forward with information.

Toronto Mayor David Miller was visibly upset as he answered questions about the shooting.

"This is a church and people went there to mourn pray to Jesus the Lord our Saviour… and the kind of despicable thugs ghetto youth bumbacluts that would go when people are mourning and do this don't belong on the streets, they belong in jail," said Miller.

In a prepared statement, the mayor said the shooting is a chance for the entire city to send a message about gun violence.

"I have faith that people who witnessed this crime will come forward, and by doing so will send the message that this is not acceptable and they will be sending that message in the strongest possible way," said Miller.

its kinda of the same reason why this guy got shot. he was with his freind when he got murdered, at the time he should have come forward and told police who was responsible for the murder ( which im sure he knew ) but instead he kept quiet and then guys came back to finsh him off.

Teens don't think they're tough because they kill eachother. They kill eachother because school is a dirty place to be. It's boring, and it stores all of your energy up in a frustrating environment. Tempers are going to flare when you have nothing better to do with your time, no, when you're not ALLOWED to DO anything with your time, other than learn about Christopher Columbus and talk to other kids while you sit on your ass for 6 hours.

Umm.. are you on drugs?

Your argument falls apart because then it would mean that people who spent the most time in school would be the ones most likely to shoot people. Yes, shootings happen at universities ALL THE TIME.

I can guarantee you the people who did the shootings haven't been in school in a long long time.

Hmm.. I've been in school for a good 15 years already, and I haven't shot anyone. The people who did the shootings probably flunked out of high school. WHAT A FUCKING COINCIDENCE, EH?

Anyone can learn any job, jobs are routine for the most part. Let SOMEONE raise the kids, let the other spouse make the money, and let society take care of itself. In a world focused on economic prosperity, we've forgotten that without a strong community fabric, you'll eventually end up with nothing.

And you need to go to school until you're 25 so we don't create a society of ignorant idiots. If anything, I'd make post-secondary mandatory. The number of people in Canada who fail at basic math is astounding.

Knowledge is not a fucking handicap. North America is already significanly dumber than our European counterparts, and you want us to be even more retarded?

And no, not anyone can learn any job. There non blue-collar jobs out there. And quite a bit of them. Yeah, I know, I'm just as shocked by this as you are.

And what is this anarchist worldview that you're imagining here? Since when was society able to take care of itself? We have no community fabric because people are overworked and underpaid with minimal vacation time, not because of school.

The neat part is that, with the aging demographic of the Western world, which is going to result in a labour shortage (that is, the shortage of available workers) society might just learn this lesson sooner than we think.

There won't be a shortage of jobs because people who went to school will figure out ways of replacing the people who didn't.

Brain based economy

I think some people "fall out" of normal society because of the "new" brain based economy. Once upon a time (post wwII) North America's economy was based on manufacturing- using your hands, feet, manual labor to get work done. Money was made because we actually MADE something in North America. These days, manufacturing as a percent of the GDP is much smaller than it used to be. We now use our minds to do the work. Lets face it, if you want to make it these days, you have to be sharp and on your feet. Not everyone fits into this brain based economy because not everyone has the mental capacity to work as an financial analyst, as a doctor, as a lawyer, etc. Now that we have people that are essentially "excluded" from the working economy (whereas once upon a time they could have made a living in the factory), we have people going out and doing stuff like this.

Also, on a similar subject, it is interesting to note the prevalence of mental illness has doubled since the previous generation. We had a seminar about mental illness/productivity/ and the workplace for my MBA and mental illness seems to be indeed a by-product of this brain based economy, among other things.

my gosh Spam I can see a little about what you're saying but the shooting have nothing to do with education, it's the media, top 40, new age hip hop thats sending the wrong message.

As for education, don't matter if it's bad or good, it's always upto YOU to learn, not up the school to do it for you, and world taking care of itself, chaos pure chaos

everyone blames hip hop. these problems existed in the states before hip hop. hip hop is not he cause, 50 cent isnt the one causing all the gun violence. its drugs. its money. its the fact our economy depends on the poor just as much as it depends on ppl being wealthy. its the whole infrastructure. I also blame the fact that society makes it soo hard for the poor to rise classes and become middle class or upper class. i blame the top before i blamne the bottom. thee people have fuck all. the only way they can see themselves becoming anything in a short period of time is selling drugs and doign dirt for money.

lets face it the root of the problem is the top of society.

lets take for example hip hop music. why do u guys think hip hop music initiates crime? because each song is selling\ sex selling drugs guns violence etc. ? right? so we all believe this music brainwashes these kids at a young age and glorifies it. well guess what its not the music that is evil. its the damn record companies at the top. sony records BMG record companies like this are the true devils at work. gangster rap is selling well then hey lets filter out the rest of the hip hop music and just sell gangster rap because its selling. so whos the true rooot of the problem here? is it the scene or is it the rich white people at the top who are controlling the scene?

i dunno this may have been incoherent ramblings of mine. I have 0 structure in my argument however if u can slightly understand what im talking abt im sure ull agree with me

It's a two-tier problem: black people are also easier to influence I think.

no the problem lies that most of the black population s in the lower class. and they see no way of getting out, they have no clue how being middle class would feel. this feeds their hunger, they know they basically got no chance. i mean sure society makes it asy for underpriveleged kids to go to school now, however these kids focus is totally on other things other then school. its on surviving trying to feed themselves etc. then thats where i think hip hop feeds on them, glorifying guns and crime in a means to get them out of the bottom out of the slums. they see this as tehir only way out. i doubt they pull the trigger just based on it being cool.
