Although I usually like to have the melodic parts of a new track outlined in my head before I start, the first bits & pieces I actually lay down on my equipment is all the constituent parts of a good groove (drums, bassline, synth lines etc). I'll spend days and days working on a good groove because that's the foundation of a track. If the basic groove doesn't feel right, nothing else will work on top of it. I remember Darren Tate saying in a SoS interview that a good groove must be something you'd quite happily listen to for hours on end and must be capable of raising hairs on a dancefloor's neck, which I absolutely agree with.

Once the groove's laid down, then it's time to add melodies, FX etc and then think about track structure. I work very slowly indeed so this next part often takes weeks. Then it's on to advanced processing and mastering: although I'll EQ and process each part as much as possible as I go along, I treat mastering as an entirely separate process.

i differ a bit

i differ a bit but there is no right and wrong whateer works for you

1 - i start with the percussion ,i program the percussion and lay it out throughout the track after i draw it in.
2 i program the bassline and again i lay it out -then do some filter sweeps ,delay etc

then from listening to it this is where the fun begins i make the lead, then the melodies and the pad and lastly i add the effects and tech synths

on other occasions i have been known to do the reverse just make the main riff first, the pad,the meodies, the lead and then from that work up everything else

I prefer to start of with an idea, then come up with the beat, add bass for rhythm and then whatever else i feel will sound good

seriously I just do things as they come.

Sometimes I start with a little groove + bass, and other times I find some cool synth/chords and work some beats under it.

There are many ways to achieve your goal.
