I understand it from a younger DJs point of view because when you start out, a mix almost feels like a race against time. This will pass the more you practice.

he he he...

classic

makes me feel like i'm on the right path, and that i'm not just a fuck up.

tbh, i never ride pitch, unless i have to. For me riding a pitch is only something i do when i fuck up....

i always saw it as an error, or a mistake. Because i always try to get the perfect match before mixing in. Sorry to anyone who does that when they mix.

if i have to ride pitch, i'm dissapointed. but then again, my mixes are usually only 30 seconds - 1m:30seconds. (YES, the longer it is, the more likely i am to adjust pitch).

Should try and ride the pitch before it's a fuck up.
You need to get that idea of it being an error or mistake out of your head because it's going to hold you back. You just need to do what needs to be done and what keeps people moving.

As for some of the others...

C'mon, riding the pitch is just a quick flick not a slidathon. You ride the pitch to avoid getting to the point where there is a mistake. If there is a one bar break you should be able to hold it out until the beats resume.
And if you have a one bar break it's a great opportunity to swap basses anyway, adds a nice effect.

I agree, there is a lot to be said for a good match prior to the mix but when you are in a working environment there are situations when you don't have the chance and dropping it and riding the pitch is what you have to work with. Besides when playing out there are tons of other things to be looking at other than matching beats.

Knowing your tracks is important and if you know them well enough you can see things coming before they happen.

Cheers
Nem

actually a combination of riding the pitch and touching/holding the plater is the best way. adapting to situations is sure the best skill in life so thats the end of it imo.

Probably the most conclusive proof in this thread that ultimately it's what works for you that's important.

Riding the pitch is good as it does allow to make smoother corrections even if it might take a little longer to learn. But then not even all of the top jocks do it so you just got to figure out what works best for you.

But hey what do I know, I'm pretty new to this DJing thing...

That is a misconception. Besides why can't you take your hand off the pitch for a second if you want to do an up and down swap at the beginning/end of a phrase then put your hand back to make sure it's nice and tight. I'm not saying your hand is superglued to the pitch, and working the EQs and the pitch fader at the same time should not pose much of a problem.

When I post it is really geared to DJs in a working environment where many distractions are or may be present. Say the promoter or the owner wants to come up and talk to you. Do you really think he cares how much time you have left to mix into your next track? Or if a wealthy patron who has been buying bottles in VIP comes up and wants to chat you up, are you really going to say STFU I'm mixing? What about a pretty girl? Of course not, you are going to talk to them.

probably just misunderstood wat you said then. wat you just described is pretty much how i do things myself so im in total agreement with you. i had originally thought u were saying keep one hand on pitch and the other on the mixer the entire time

I've seen Steve Lawler drop a track in with the fader all the way up and not even touch the platter/pitch during the mix...that is some fucking good beatmatching...

i remember reading a interview with steve lawler and he says that he mixes only cds... isnt it true that some cd mixers can do the beat matching for you... this way it would be feasable if lawler drops in a track without first listening to it?

if u can perfectly beatmatch withing like 20-30 seconds... lol... why all the effort to pitch ride? especially during the transition?

after beatmatching you have plenty of freaking time to do whatever else you wanna do (and not waste time on pitchbending) like beatmatching a third track, looping it (if cds) and bringing it in? or adding effects..or sorting tracks out? if a track is 6-7 mins, there's plenty of time to do that. Who needs pitch riding if you good and quick at beatmatching?

Either way, if you've beat matched before mixing, you still have to make small adjustments on the pitch every 30 seconds or so.

Anyways, I'm just learning to pitch ride.

um no... with %0.02 pitch increments on, for example, CDJ-200 you dont have to do anything for at least 2 mins. ;-) try it
