I haven't used Ableton, so I can't say for sure. I actually am curious as to the workings of it though. Maybe you could explain it. I will encourage you to learn the other mediums though. It's one thing to be Sasha and loop sounds intricately throughout a set on Ableton. It's another thing to go to a show and press play on an Ableton set. Does Ableton match tempos or do you still have to lock your tracks in? Is it sheerly software (I know Sasha has some rowdy controllers, but I heard they only made two for him)? I would like to be filled in, if you have the time. Not trying to talk shit either, but if they do match your beats for you, then you're not djing. I have a friend out here that has made some really nice mixes on Ableton, but I've always wondered what that entails. Can't knock Sasha, because he's always pushing everything to the boundaries, and has proven that he can play the other mediums.
I would encourage you to play with some records, if you have a chance too. Not to necessarily use them out, but so that you know how it works. CDs are very similar, but very different at the same time. Just my advice to you since you are fairly new to the game. Take what you want from it. |
Like I said, I just got 2 CDJ-1000s and I'm waiting on the mixer. I want to know how to mix extremely well on CDs, as well as go from CD to ableton and back.
Why are you not DJing if you're not beatmatching? Is that all you need to do to mix records, is press play and match them up? lol
All the people I hear who look down on Ableton have no idea how it works or what it can do. Its like having absolute complete control over your set. You can edit tracks as you go along in the mix, and set up crazy stuff in seconds. Startpoints/endpoints, multiple loops, and stack a huge variety of effects on top of each other. And I hate to break it to you but Sasha is barely doing jack with Ableton. Knowing how it works, and how he uses it, he uses it to make the mix sound the way he wants, to which he excels...but he is no where near using the full capabilities of the program, or even his controller.
Its like...the ways you mix on decks, they expand x100 on Ableton.
