Between 1981 and 1991 there was a 7.5% decrease in the Christian population.
I would expect that rate of decrease to be even higher between 1991 and today.
If you are denying that canada is still a primarily christian country then you have your head in the sand.
Even still, we were founded with these traditions and it's highly offensive that some people think that just because they show up one day we have to cater to their every whim. If you dont like our traditions then dont come here.
I rememeber reading about some immigrants who refused to make an oath to the queen when getting citizenship because they viewed her as the former "opressor" of their country. And what did dumb ass canada do? We bent over backwards for them.
Excuse me but that is OUR tradition and YOU CHOSE to come here. Part of coming here is abiding by our tradition. Same goes for christmas.

sorry, closest figures I could find..... the last census was 2001 (I would suspect they are not done compliling the results of it yet). Regardless, there is little chance that it droped from 84% to less then 50% in 14 years.

Notwithstanding your antecdote regarding the oath to the Queen, by and large it is not immigrants or even the non-christian population that are precipitating the protest against Christian symbolism or tradition present in the state. This is largely being done by groups comprised mainly of Christian or formerly Christian middle class citizens that are fearful that we may offend people through these traditions and symbols. Please do not blame the immigrant population, they are not responsible for this.

I see a small segment of them as being responsible for starting the tide. I have seen it personally. Ive watched people bitch about christmas and how it offends them. Those people are largely silent these days because they have gotten their way but i rememeber when this all started 15 years ago how up in arms they were. It's nice to see the trend starting to reverse but make no mistake that once the "offended" start to realize they will be back out in full force. I suspect this time though they wont get as much sympathy from the silent majority.

BTW, just to add fuel to the fire in the argument as to whether or not Canada is a Christian country, I submit for your review the preamble to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982)
quote:
Whereas Canada is founded upon the principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law:
I will also point out that in the first draft God was not included, however, most of the provinces would not ratify it without the inclusion of God in the constitution.

I have personally never witnessed anyone I know (or overheard) bitch about the Christmas issue. If anything most people (of all races and religious backgrounds) are quite accomodating to my beliefs....
