Everytime I was nice about something I would get crapped on and taken advantage of. So after a while I more or less gave up the nice guy routine and traded for being a dick. I had to quit a little later bc I didn't enjoy that role either and would prefer to be nice.

awww, that really sucks that ppl were like that!! It would b great to see more security guards and bouncers who visibly look out for ppl like they should.

I agree on the point that being in contact with ppl like that does have some positive benefit, because u do learn to deal with it and u learn to let it go. I odnt care for small talk or anything like that but what gets to me is that someone walks in and assumes their right to not use common sense manners because its my job. We all hve jobs and we all have to work to make a living. we all share in the pains of having to walk into work regardless of what we do (unless u love ur job). so why would we for a second decide to leave out a simple hello or acknowledgement for the person serving you, weather its in a restaurant, store whatever?? It goes beyond waitressing. im sure weve all had days where the smallest act of kindness goes a long way. Theres enough shit going on in everyones lives and around the world. whats the harm in being polite, honestly. It all comes back to us anyway. Its one big cycle.

I can totally see where waitresses are coming from. I worked in a 5 star resort cooking and pantry work for 5 years....... i know people make mistakes and that but I would never yell at them because i konw what type of people they are dealing with out in the dining room.... the stories i have heard about people treating waitresses are just mind boggeling. Some people can be rude its pathetic..... for instance i went to a diner and it took over 1 hour to get our food...... and the waitress was doing the best she can...... we never got upset but as w were leave little did we know all hte kitchen staff was watching the hockey game so we now knew it wasn't her fault... people just have to be patient that's all.

Seen done it all, it is part of the job to be treated like shizah, however it doesn't make it right. People have snapped their bloody fingers at me (best way to get a squirt of Rose's Lime Cordial in your eye) and whistled at as well (best way to get a "special" meal or drink)there are ways to make your the restaurant fun trust me. We kept a book at this one place I worked at and wrote down everytime some jackass did something stupid, annoying, or funny. It was a great way to spend those long straights with the staff, reading what those dick customers did. Our industry, with all the bad, is still amazing. What other industry has you going out with your co-workers almost every night, or having a couple drinks at your bar when your finished. You get to know your fellow staff much better than a normal gig, and in turn build up amazing friendships. So don't feel discouraged, hun, think about those office 9-5 zombies next time you have a bad night!

Also what other industry makes 50,000+ a year tax free?

The smallest act of kindness does go a long way and there is of course no harm in being polite. My only point was that it gets you nowhere to find fault with the people who forget because they are absorbed in their own little world. Especially with something so simple as not saying hello - maybe their mind just went on autopilot and they got ahead of themselves, it's happened to me sometimes and I'm sure it's happened to you too.

IMHO, people only seem to notice the rude ones and ignore the polite ones, when it really should be the other way around.
