Working in the service or retail industry means dealing with difficult clients.
Unfortunately, MLB is right, it is part of the job. This is why we need bullies in school - to prepare us for the bullies (or just assholes) that we're inevitably going to face as adults. Personally, I think that if you're getting upset over someone who doesn't say hello and make small-talk, you're probably going to end up in tears when you get the REALLY bad patrons.
If you don't like it, quit. I'm sure the tips are nice but there are thousands of other jobs out there you can get that won't put you into contact with as many jerks. |
I agree on the point that being in contact with ppl like that does have some positive benefit, because u do learn to deal with it and u learn to let it go. I odnt care for small talk or anything like that but what gets to me is that someone walks in and assumes their right to not use common sense manners because its my job. We all hve jobs and we all have to work to make a living. we all share in the pains of having to walk into work regardless of what we do (unless u love ur job). so why would we for a second decide to leave out a simple hello or acknowledgement for the person serving you, weather its in a restaurant, store whatever?? It goes beyond waitressing. im sure weve all had days where the smallest act of kindness goes a long way. Theres enough shit going on in everyones lives and around the world. whats the harm in being polite, honestly. It all comes back to us anyway. Its one big cycle.

Waiter/Bartender here 8 years...
Seen done it all, it is part of the job to be treated like shizah, however it doesn't make it right. People have snapped their bloody fingers at me (best way to get a squirt of Rose's Lime Cordial in your eye) and whistled at as well (best way to get a "special" meal or drink)there are ways to make your the restaurant fun trust me. We kept a book at this one place I worked at and wrote down everytime some jackass did something stupid, annoying, or funny. It was a great way to spend those long straights with the staff, reading what those dick customers did. Our industry, with all the bad, is still amazing. What other industry has you going out with your co-workers almost every night, or having a couple drinks at your bar when your finished. You get to know your fellow staff much better than a normal gig, and in turn build up amazing friendships. So don't feel discouraged, hun, think about those office 9-5 zombies next time you have a bad night!
Also what other industry makes 50,000+ a year tax free?
hehe

grrr, one of my biggest pet peeves!! I work as a waitress and once in a while we get the customer who forgets their manners. Hes sitting down and i walk up to him with menu and cutlery in hand, i go to say some form of a greeting and before i can finish, without even looking up he starts naming out his order, " over easy, sausage, ..." yadda yadda. ...buddy, if ur sitting down to eat, im sure u have the time to remind yourself im human too and that it wont kill you or effect ur appetite (unless i havnt slept all night:P) to say hello! Please u guys. If u or anyone u know has that habit...
its very irritating to the servers.Besides, if were irritated we wont give u the service we would have otherwise...and u might get more than what u ordered with ur food
Fell free to post some stories of rudeness from ur workplaces! maybe some of who have actually said something back to a rude client/customer?? |
As much as some customers are idiots. Its your job to always give them the best service possible. You arent getting paid to like or dislike customers. You are getting paid to do your job.
