a lot of you guys sound exactly like the ppl that said CDJs would never catch on.

The future of dance music in clubs will be surround sound capability. Artists have been producing albums in surround for a while now, so why not track singles? Clubs spend thousands on superior sound systems so its very capable to accomdate the DVJs.

Ever witness a track in surround in a club? I have, when I saw deep dish in Crobar NYC last year. Anyone remember near the end of the night sharam was appearing to have trouble mixing in Loudeast - Lights Out (Samio remix)? Thats because he was using the DVJ and let me tell you. For those of you who know the track, the effect that sounds like a train running on tracks in the song sounded like it was coming straight down the middle of the club. I was standing near the side and it was amazing because i heard it start from the back of the club go towards the front. Imagine hearing high hats come at you alternating from all 4 corners of the club.

actually, and correct me if im wrong, Ive heard that most of the club soundsystems are set to mono. Because of the complex architecture in clubs its extremelly hard to build a soundsystem that would sound good everywhere you go in the club(club dancefloor is not symmetric). Walls cause delays in sound and if the sound is set to stereo or even 5.1 surround delay effect would grow so big that it would be considered noise. Maybe the sound would be ok on the dancefloor, but a few meters aside it would be noise.

Again, I dont know this for a fact since I dont design club soundsystems for a living, and feel free to correct me!

This is correct, I was going to post something similar myself. Some clubs DO use a stereo setup but this tends to be restricted to ones with a true sense of left/right sides of the whole club, usually as you say symmetrical ones with the booth in the centre at one end.

I think, if set up correctly, surround sound COULD work in these venues, but a club would have to invest a fair amount to even find out and until then people are unlikely to start producing music in 5.1 aimed for club play... and because of this the clubs are unlikely to try installing surround sound, so it's a bit of a catch 22 really!

But at the same time, how cool would it be if you were standing on the dancefloor and a cymbal sweep or whatever went straight around your head??! I'm all for the idea of surround sound in clubs, but I think it would have to be a whole industry movement to get it to work - and clubs tend to dislike ideas which result in them spending more money!

Surround sound might be cool, but any sound enthusiast will tell you that music should be heard in stereo and surround left for movies and games. It's also true that you'd have to be standing in the middle of the speaker setup to experience the full effect. More efficient and better surround soud technics are always coming out, so this actually might catch on some day.

I believe BT is making music in 4.1 now.. i dont think its released in 4.1 yet, but being made in 4.1 i think..

Jean Michel Jarre has recently released a whole album in 5.1 (on DVD) - admittedly not club music but it's all electronic... and Richie Hawtin has just released a mix album mixed in 5.1 - more clubby music but obviously not something he's going to be able to do in a club.

Personally I don't believe music should be exclusively stereo but I wouldn't be too disappointed if surround sound music was kept to home listening and we never saw it in clubs.
