It IS EDM, even.

u know it's interesting...

i get a lot of the same shit here, from people in my university...

BUT! some of them always see me listening to trance 24/7. they also know that's what i DJ, and that i've never really tried to DJ rnb (so it's like.... wtf, RnB is the cool music)

eventually, some of them get curious...

one of them asked me to let him listen to some of my shit... so i disconnected my headphones, and let it play out of the laptop speakers( i was listening to PAul VAN DYK LIVE @ AMNESIA 2002), and he liked nothing but u.

about 1 week later i gave him some commeercially/cheesey sounding stuff from Paul Van Dyk - Reflections...

a few weeks later, he had gotten hold of some of his own paul van dyk stuff. then i gave him something less cheesy (than reflections), DJ TIESTO- PARADE OF THE ATHLETES..

at first, he hated the repition. But i forced him to just listen for a while... after the breakdown, he said he wanted to keep CD for a while. i lent him a few of my CDS.

anyways... this started a chain reaction... and now a couple of ppl in my year (class of about 40-50)are starting to get into trance. ALthough they mighn't love it yet... atleast they are now open-minded to it.

whoever said that u leave a big impression hit the nail on the fucking head.

anyways. if someone listening to RnB tells u that trance ("techno") is just repetitive shit, made by a computer, then just tell them it's a hell of a lot more advanced than some guy talking about how great he is, with one instrument looped in the background.

I occasionally got teased for listening to EDM, but equally as often I found that some people who didn't realize they'd like it were quite receptive to trance, house, or whatever. Most of the time the problem is just ignorance, which I can't really hold against someone.

Nowadays I've been listening to a lot of metal, for which I get made fun of almost as much as I did for trance! So you can't really escape it, unless you listen to exactly what everyone else does. I like being known as the guy with the ecclectic musical taste, anyway. It's part of my character.

its been a long time since anyone around here has picked on EDM. I live in the northern va/DC area and hip hop and mainstream is so bad nowadays no one really cares for it anymore.

A lot of ppl do like goin to clubs to dance and the EDM clubs here are far less drama than the hip hop ones.

I haven't been ripped-on for being an EDM person for a while, nor do I know many people who listen to EDM.

I too have found that if I say I listen to EDM people automatically assume it's that radio remixed crap that you get on CD's in the bargain bin at Walmart marked "Trance Party 2005" or somesuch. (true story) There've been times, though, that I've been able to sit a friend or two down and show them something they end up enjoying. There are still the people that protest "but trance is still so repetitive! I got through my entire folder of DJ Mystik tracks and I still don't like it!" (sarcasm intended) but hey, you can't change 'em all!
I still live in the residence halls at school due to it being a requirement of my job, and I do get some funny looks when I have my door open and people walking by can hear what I'm listening to. Makes me chuckle a little.

I've often been on the receiving end of strange looks when I tell people what I listen to; either they look at me as if I were a hedgehog playing a ukelele or they say "oh. that's cool." and bugger off. Guess it doesn't help that my two favorite genres are EDM and metal.. . The fact is my musical taste is just way bizarre to most people, and I couldn't care less really what they think about it.

The only thing that sucks is I meet very few people whose taste and passion for music overlaps with mine. That's why I come to places like TA, though, to find people as crazy as me...

i see someone mentioned that here in Miami it's mainstream. Well, in a way it's not. For some reason it's hard for me to find people who like edm down here. Through highschool I had only like 3 friends that actually listened to it. Down you here you ask anybody if they know what trance is and they're like...wtf??? lol. damn it's sad really, all i can think to myself is, "damn, they're missing out".
We have a number of clubs that are dedicated to edm(like Space) but for the most part, you'd be hard-pressed to find edm heads walking around the streets. we had that radio station 93.1 that tried to bring edm to the mainstream but all they played was cheese and that ended up giving people who didn't know about it a horrid idea of this music....

People are always afraid of what they don't understand, hence the negative feedback. This goes for almost any issue.
