If you can create a CGI that good why would you wait 10 years?

D-res is totally right. My best friend is into 3D and so he is always showing me the latest shit he is working on, etc. If you think the pic in this thread looks good, head over to www.cgtalk.com or www.3dtotal.com and check out the artwork. I guarantee you will shit yourself.

It's one thing to just draw a picture that looks that good. But add in backgrounds, run-time, logic, etc... Takes alot of computing power to make the entire game look that way.

yeps...thats why replays/cutscenes often look better than the actual game itself; because all the processing power is put towards rendering a scripted sequence.

You do realise those pictures have been modified with a 2D packaging like Photoshop. When you render a frame, you render what you render but with these single frame images, it can be modified beyond extent of what the original Rendering package is even capable of.
It's not impossible but films such as Spirits Within have alot of backgrounds or particles composited over the scene just for the fact that many renderers can't do all that.
The best way to describe is say Photoshop is Make-up and the Rendered image is the model. The model's (images) standalone appearance is good but with Photoshop (makeup) it is improved. Rather, the model can be walk and strike a pose and the makeup is still there but with 3D rendering, you make one frame look spectacular, then what happens to the 2nd frame?
These people that made these images, all of them have used 2 or more other softwares to make that image.
So how do you think a video games engine is capable of that kind of simulation?
Though it will get there by 10 years definetly, and it's already started with HDR. The new graphics cards are capable of realtime HDR and many games are coming with this feature.

HL2 is just now implementing HDR. I can run it with my 6600GT OC in single player on high settings fine, but in a multiplayer environment it stuggles a bit.

I think it might be trying to simulate HDR or something because according to Nvidia, 6600 series graphics card don't have HDR.
Just for the mere fact that HDR is going to require alot of power.
The 7800 can.
