I would definately recommend wearing earplugs (although at times i'm guilty of not wearing them). All the clubs I've been to have the sound high enough to cause ear damage, especially since you're in there for many hours.

I've used the regular earplugs and the ER20s that some people have mentioned in here.

The ER20s are MUCH better than the regular "foam" earplugs most people use. The sound is more clear and you can actually enjoy the music rather than listen to muffled sounds. They are comfortable once you get used to them, near the end of the night I sometimes have to check whether they're still there...you also get used to the lower volume, and I've found that sometimes it's still too loud with the earplugs (but if you think that's loud...try taking them out)

Next on my list is to get custom ones made with a 25dB filter...I think that would be the ultimate route...although at a cost of around $200

Yes, the ER20s do stick out and look kinda funky...I've seen one pic of somebody wearing them, and you could see the plugs...search the Toronto forums for the Labor of Love review and/or picture threads (i'm almost certain the pic is in there)

Interesting topic. I never wore those ear plugs until very recently because the music was extremely loud (more than 130dBA). They even warned at the entrance about the loud music and suggested to get one-time earplugs at no cost at the wardrobe counter. Finally I decided to use them but - it did not help.

Earplugs help a lot against too loud higher frequencies but they do not help at all against very low frequencies. I got a huge headache after some time from my vibrating head and brain...

Firstly, extended exposure to sound over 85 dba can cause permanent damage.

Any decent club with be 90dba+

I got these 27dba reducing earplugs for £5

I always carry a pair of ER-20's with me. They do look a bit shit, but I favour my hearing over what a bunch of gimps in a club that I will never see again think of me.

I've forgotten them the last 3 times I've been out

Tested in in my house though, and they seem decent enough.

is it just me, or does anyone find that in some clubs (especially some of the RnB ones i've been in), the music is so god damned loud, that u can't even make out anythin of the music in the mids? Vocals are totally incomprehensible, because they're so god damned loud?
