I'd disagree. We have a discussion going on in AuTA somewhat similar to this, and it is obvious that in every city in Australia that trance is becoming less popular amongst the general everyday clubbing crowd and house is growing. There are less trance nights in favour for house nights, clubs are turning promoters away because they know they can get bigger crowds with house nights, and there are less viable trance nights due to reducing crowds.
Is trance dying? Probably not.
Is it becoming less popular? I'd say from my observations/experiences yes.
Is this going to lead to the 'second coming' that so many people seem to hope for (less commerciality, higher production quality etc)? God knows |
Surely this has always been the way. It's my opinion that trance was always less favorable that house simply because of what trance is. It's easy to dance and party to commercial music cause your exposed to it all the time, while house is certainly more "underground" if you will than pop and hip hop and r'n'b it still gets a lot more airplay and exposure over all. So people are familiar and aint afriad to admit they like it.
The only trance they hear is what they think all trance is, cliché filled vocal disasters. Which are bought into by plenty of people who simply don't know better, and hence becomes uncool.
Because for the most part people want to be cool and follow what their mates think is good and trendy. They will reject anyything that goes against the grain, this is in general what most of us consider trance and prog.
You only need to check out the producers forums and the DJ section to hear and see talent that will blow your mind. Theses guys are the future and so long as we have people like that we will have trance.
It is my firm belife that trance will be around for a long time, and i reckon in the not too distant future it will undergo a massive movement again, coming back stronger and better than ever, whilst all the cool crew miss out on some of the best music they never heard. Unlucky for them really...
As a side note, my friend was talking about his music the other day, he listens to really heavy metal music and he said he wishes the riffs were more old skool. I was shocked, but yes even other fans of other types of music belive their art is dying. I think the only thing that will end up killing it is negative attitudes.
Okay, enough startrek crap. It's too early in the day.
