I guess it depends what context you're going into a break with. I tried it after a 5 year relationship but it was more because I wasn't sure it was going to work long term and need some time away, for myself. During the break I thought I wanted him back, but once were were back together it was clear we had just grown apart and weren't wroking out. Less than 2 weeks after the break ended (which lasted about a week) we broke up.

Hope that doesn't happen to you.

I would sugget have clearly defined rules of what can/can't happen during the break and make sure you're on the same page. I can't help but think of the Friends episode when Ross and Rachel were on a "break" and he slept with someone else.

Think of how you'll feel if you start to find out about the things he's doing during the break. You don't want to cause yourself any unnecessary heartbreak - especially if things are going well for you two right now.

If either of you starts seeing other people, it might lead to something, and if only one of you finds someone they like hearts will be broken.

And even if you come back to one another there will most likely be some jealousy and trust issues.

Needing a "break" is an excuse people use when they feel like the other person - or just the relationship in general - is getting too serious. To me, this situation is indicative of a fear of commitment, or perhaps just a reluctance. And if you're living together, it could also get really awkward.

I'm not claiming this to be hard science nor am I saying that it definitely applies to you and Eric, but I sometimes got that speech from girls in my naïve days and it pretty much always turned out the same way (splitsville). I hope for the best for you guys, sorry if that wasn't what you wanted to hear!
