on my eighth year here in japan now. Just my 2 cents but since it seems you're headed in this direction anyway with your study major and possible future career, u might as well take this opportunity to come over now and get your feet wet.

I think tokyo is a really fun place to be as a student. As far as i can remember, u can work up to 20 hours on a student visa officially but i remember alot of english conversation schools paid me under the counter (i was there on a tourist visa) so there should be work if the need gets dire. It's true that living expensives are high, but in my opinion, not that much higher than living in any other big city in the world.

It seems to me that you're gonna need to make some sacrifices in coming over lifestyle wise but the overall reward of being over here in a place as crazy as tokyo would make up for it. BTW sophia university is a nice university, one of the better universities in the country.

as for clubbing, tokyo is great, all styles of music catered for altho some places will be harder to find than others. I live up north now in hokkaido, but if u do come over and u need a lifeline or anything, feel free to pm me for my email.

= )

Thanks, mongeone, I was really hoping you'd give some input here as well

And I heard stories about "why we shouldn't hang out at Brazilian colonies", and I think it's a shame there's such tension there.

I've got to go to bed now, but I'm reading your posts once again tomorrow. Nice to know there's a nice trance scene there, btw, I was looking forward to listening to some good music there

ps.: w00t, thanks to you too, spiralx - it's nice to heard from you guys!

Btw the book I read that I recommend is Japanland http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/15...=books&v=glance

I'm not going to go into details because all of what I know of Japan is second hand from a couple of friends who went as english tutors and books I have read. Btw my negative opinion of Japan is based on facts not 'ignorance and preconceptions' as Jdat thinks. Japan has a closed society that is unfriendly to foreigners. By unfriendly I don't mean you will be physically threaten but for the most part you will be shunned and looked down on by most.

yeah, that sounds like an interesting experience. the only time that i've really felt like a minority was at a party with a bunch of indians, and nobody talked to me and one guy got drunk and started being a dick and calling me "americano".

great thread....it's good to get the reality check now rather than when i get there. i've heard that if you don't know the language, you're cut off....if you know it, people hold you in high respect.

I'm considering spending some time teaching in south america once I get my degree.

By the way, passing by the airport some time ago, I saw a stand that was selling T-shirts with big maple leafs on them and underneath; "never mind the accent, I'm canadian"
