I'm digging my own grave here... but...
Tijs has played 362 recognised tracks in the last 12 months...
230 of those were played no more than on 5 occassions.
and in 137 live performances in 2005:
The Loves We Lost (57)
Adagio For Strings (54)
La Noche (46)
Traffic (44)
Just Be (41)
are the stand-alone signature tunes he 'happened' to play.
So thats an awful lot of toilet/drinks breaks to anyone with any audible sense
As Jason said - its a shame he can't drop the signature tunes after a few months and just move on. But as i tried to point out a few posts above, the crowd reaction & demand of the new territories he is playing are making that a thankless task. |
Interesting info, thanks. Regarding the bold, I think this just reflects poorly on his DJ skill. To me, if a DJ has to rely on known ch00ns and hits to get the crowd going, hes pretty fucking lazy. Sasha has been doing this with some trentemoller and tiefschwarz and it gets anoying. There are LOADS of fucking good music out there, you just have to find it, its up to the DJ to find new tunes that will destroy the dancefloor, not recycle the same crap over and over, no matter how good. Or play em out, and then stop for awhile, and ressurect them much later...
I dunno, I think there is much too much music available, that is really good, to just be playing the same shit all the time. Its just plain lazyness, or self whoring. I mean, if he cant mix well, cant pick good tunes, cant find exciting new music, what does he do thats worth anything these days?

I agree with that
I think its a scene-wide trend/problem in the trance genre at present to actually feel the need to promote themselves everywhere they go.
Tijs only seems to change that attitude when returning to Netherlands for gigs... cos he knows the crowd there just simply won't tolerate hearing the Just Be Album again.
He's been burning the candle at both ends - cos on tour he can't not play those tunes, otherwise the crowd just react badly.
I didn't think it was possible, but in Budapest, where he was dropping some nice new (to my ears) Proggy stuff like Petersky & Booka Shade.. the 10'000 capacity arena was stationary... milling around and yawning. 10 minutes later Love Comes Again was dropped and you couldn't breathe for flailing arms and leaping lunatics.
When he gets that kind of reaction from his signature tunes, what choice does he have but to keep them lingering in the box the longest
While i'd agree the progressive DJs change their tunes on a faster rotation, that could also be something to do with the state of the scene as a whole... I mean - i'd rather hear the same good tracks for 6 months, than have him play the same tunes as the majority of ETN DJs. |
yeah i agree. but then again, his music is targeted to an audience that is different than progressive dj's. once again as a rule, i'd say the majority of trance fans, and in this case tiesto fans, are younger in terms of EDM experience. like you said, the netherland crowd isn't going to take some shit set...because they've been around the block and know what's up. but i think that tiesto has choosen the road he has by producing and playing the type of music that he does. not everyone can name all the songs that tiesto plays like the hardcore tracklisters here and on tiesto.com...most have a very vague idea of EDM and their appreciation of it, so of course they only want to here love comes again...that's all they know.
progressive dj's on the other hand, have always played sets which i think appeal more to people that appreciate EDM and have for some time. unless you can appreciate them people think they are boring and monotonous. i think that's even evident in the members of TA for the most part. because of that, i think it gives them that freedom you are talking about to play more tunes...because like the netherland tiesto fans, they know what's up and don't want the same thing all the time.

In my opinion the whole superstar big DJ thing is getting boring and the DJs realize that as long as they are popular they can play shitty sets....because the kiddies will still think they are Gods...thats why i dont bother with them anymore...apart from Sander every DJ i dig now is a virtual nobody. |
I'd agree with that too. Of the 6 hours liveset in December i like the proggy first hour and the final 30 minutes where he played Preach tunes. The rest was ASOT filler.
The whole "worshipping" of the big names in trance is a complete joke.
Take one guy in the UK for example, he makes 4-5 flags to thrust in Tiesto's face every gig he goes to. The look on Tijs's face was damn priceless when he spotted the gimp in the crowd at Gods.
I find it pretty funny that 2-3 years ago you were banned from the tiesto forums for having a negative attitude, nowadays, its pretty hard to find a Tiesto veteran who isn't moaning on the current sorry state of affairs.
