Last weekend when I was at home for semester break, my mom came in when I was playing a PvD set and she asked me what kind of music it was, and if it was 'techno'. I was then able to explain to my mom the basic differences between trance, house, and techno.

I think someone needs to post a link to a site which explains the ins and outs of each genre...

ive always considered techno to be of a more percussive nature than trance...

Progressive usually does have build ups, and sometimes melody but they're usually focused more on the basslines/beats. And progressive can be uplifting, but in a different way than trance.

There are alot of different kinds of Techno, but if you want to know what it is then check out DJ's like Richie Hawtin (The SHIT, aka Plastikman), Dave Clarke, etc.

Check out music from the Bush label.

Techno is not neccessarily "250 BPM". 250 BPM is insanely fast.

Techno was born in America, in Detroit and surrounding area in the 80's, from what I understand. Theres some techno that comes from europe but its alot harder and faster. I think thats where the 250 BPM statement came from.

I have a techno record I bought to mess around with and the BPM is about 140 I would say.

heres my definition

Trance - Emotional stuff, like a roller coaster ride, ups n downs

Techno - like riding a bullet train, fast & furious, with the occasional uphill/downhill rides.

try imagining yourself in both of these rides. u will get the meaning.

Hard Core = Fukin Fast BPM
Techno = Fast BPM
Trance = Moderate BPM
House = Alternate BPM

You can't really say what is what , as every tune is different. there can be some variation in what it is simlatude and not.
