I don't know maybe that didn't make any sense.
Nice analogy.

when i try and speed up or slow down a record i just use the spindle at the middle of the record, and push down to slow it up, or move it clockwise to speed it up, and then move the pitch slider very slightly in the direction it needs to be moved....

The metal knob that pokes up from the hole in the record? I try to speed it up or slow it down from the part of the record closest to that knob where there is no music so I don't finger up the record.

To speed up a record a bit I do the following:

I give the 45 rpm button a quick tap while holding the 33rpm button. The speed will increase for just a quick moment, just enough to get the beats matched. When you keep holding the 45 rpm button you'll eventually speed up to 45rpm mode.

This works on Technics SL's, I'm not sure whether this works with other TT's.

Disadvantages are that this only works on 33 rpm and that it might be audible when doing it during strings/synth lines. But when doing it quickly in between it just might be the trick.

For slowing down I just break the disk slightly at the dots with my left hand. I also use the spindle for both slowing down/speeding up and sometimes the pitch fader.

Yes. That's what I use too...it works the best of anything I think. I usually do it using the spindle while beatmatching, then when it's actually live if it needs adjustments I ride the pitch. The problem with riding the pitch while beatmatching is I never get it exact, because I don't remember the EXACT location of where it was. This is fine when it's live, but kind of pointless while beatmatching. While beatmatching I'll turn the spindle or squeeze the spindle and then nudge the pitch slider slightly in the appropriate direction, so i know very exactly how much I changed the pitch. However, when live, it obviously sounds better to just use the pitch slider.

As for riding the pitch, make the smallest adjustments that you can. I usually just move it slightly, leave it in that position until the music lines up, then move it back.
