however, disagreeing with you on this point hardly counts. some countries do very well with no maximum limit on the term of their elected leaders.

now, i agree, in your current environment id be pretty unhappy too!
and perhaps the US is one of those countries that needs a limit coz too much power is rested in the hands of one person.

those in the know: whats the chances of this happening? i wouldve thought it was a pretty long shot?

Actually, some of the most inaccurate information being released to the public has been promulgated by our very own government and it's servile minions through the mainstream news media.

The internet is really just a means of transmitting blocks of data (over a packet switched network.) You can't say that something is or is not credible just because it's on the internet, that's like saying that something's not credible because you heard it over the phone or because you read it in a book at the library.

I can easily get on the internet, go to Republican Congressman Ron Paul's webpage and be more than content in knowing that he's one of the more honest politicians out there (who stands by and protects the same American Constitution that he swore to uphold.) On that same www.house.gov site, I could go to Tom DeLay's page and I don't think that I would feel as comfortable simply because I now know the nature of that man. Maybe that's not the best analogy, but I think you should see what I'm saying.

In the US a baboon can (and is) running the country, as long as you surround yourself with the right people. People like Dumbsfeld and Dick who were defered from Vietnam like 5 times and Dick even said " I've got better places to be than Vietnam" you're asking for a horrible presidency at that point in time.

I'm thoroughly amazed that you just posted that! Now, I'm not refuting it in any way - I'm just taken back by what you seem to be admitting here.

does it ultimately make any difference? i dont know much about the inner workings of the US political system, but how important is the president in terms of setting policy? do the underlings provide much of the advice & counsel? would changing the figurehead every 4-8 years really change the direction of a government or party?

obviously i still disagree coz bush needs to go even more seriously than that time i wet myself.

I was thinking more along the lines of a drink of some good Scotch.

Well, in all actuality it should (but it doesn't.) I'm saying that only in consideration of the fact that most of the candidates are bought before any ballots are ever even cast.

If the government was truly "for the people, by the people" as it is supposed to be, it would matter tremendously.

This thread was funnier on page two, when Trancer was flipping out on everyone.

But, that being said, I'd prefer to see them have perhaps two 5 year terms, if only because at least one solid year is pretty much wasted every year campaigning, when they should be "Presiding". Also, it takes time to get good at one's job, no matter what that job is. Just about the time these guys are getting good, they're leaving office.

But anything more is too risky in terms of abuse of power.

I don't think we'll ever see reform on this issue though. This bill, if it's genuine and up to date (I've heard nothing about it anywhere else but here so far, so it doesn't sound too nes-worthy at this point), is just not worth worrying about...like most of Trancer's concerns.

FDR had two major good things going for him: first, his new deal reforms were absolutely essential in turning this country around. Second, his leadership and recognition of getting us into WW2 was crucial. However, in my opinion, in most other aspects, his presidancy was worse than bush's.

That being said, I wouldn't have wanted any other president at the time because the ramifications of the things he had going for him vastly outweighed the bad.

With respect to term limits, our founding fathers never envisioned career politicans ... it was always assumed that much like citizen soldiers, that there would always be citizen politicians.
