I would idealy like to explore music with as little filtering from others as possible, but even the record stores filter out all the music that they get. Stepping beyond the music store isn't really practical though, sure you can surf the net for unsigned kids who post their stuff for free desparetly looking for attention, but it is alot of work when you try and venture outside the ameteur producer forum on this site. To get a steady stream of music that isnt filtered by record companies you have to be in the privaleged position of having a bunch of youngbloods sending stuff to you. Of course you could probably go out and meet alot of aspiring musicians at parties and at the places that sell indy stuff, but it is hard finding the good stuff in such huge piles of music.
So there is a balance, on one side it needs to be easy, to be able to go through alot of stuff in as little time as possible. On the other side one does not want to be a sheep and just listen to what gets the hype all the time. I guess that balance is found at the EDM shops online, you have your samples and a catalog of signed music, only problem being that music shops require money, but the online places seem to offer more music for less money yay.
These days I have trouble identifying just what it is that I am looking for. I can't pin down any sort of expectations or demands that I have for music, I dont really even care if I can dance to it. I can think of things that I dont like though, growling and whitenoise, obnoxious percussion, songs that lack contrast, stuff like that. It is hard to pick musical preferences because I find that alot of the things that I enjoy about this music have nothing to do with the way it sounds, they seem to be cultural instead.

i use as many different methods as i can...
- digital download sites like Beatport, Audiojelly, Resonant Vibes, Magnetic Grooves, DJdownload, etc... as well as subscribing to their newsletters so that i get a list of new releases every week
- reading reviews of releases on sites like Progressive-Sounds
- searching all releases on labels i like
- recommendations from my boyfriend and many friends i've met through TA
- following tracklists of my favorite artists
- internet radio stations like Proton, Frisky, etc... as well as podcasts
- reading the New Releases forum on TA
- reading EDM-related interviews/articles
99% of my music discovery is through the internet. living in Wisconsin doesn't give me much access to great record stores or CD shops that have lots of new cutting edge material. i don't spin vinyl so i never have to worry about buying/shipping records. last time i bought any CDs was in Athens, Greece - otherwise i order them online since 90% of the stuff i want can't be found at stores around here.
i dunno, for me, the internet is like instant satisfaction. i can hear a track in a set that i just absolutely love, do 5 minutes of searching for it on a digital download site, buy it, download it, and boom... done.
also i don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but Myspace is actually a great way to keep up with your favorite artists/label releases. many DJs, producers, and labels have myspace pages, allowing them to send out bulletins or post blogs when new stuff is released... i've actually found a few exclusive tracks that were never released but were offered for download on a producers page.
