Once upon a time a DJ mix-CD was about a DJ showcasing his skills... I suppose. No personal offense intended, but if I may be allowed to give my opinion.. I'd say this kind of mix cds is just retarded.

I really wonder why these big name DJs apparently don't want to make a mix cd that's actually mixed on the tables/cd player/whatsoever. I know they aren't exactly brilliant when it comes to mixing techniques, but come on...

ermmmmmm technology ? you can have more options than tt/cd player/whatsoever ?

i liked armins asot mixes....whatever he uses, i havent seen too many djs mix so well..... i might hate armin live, but heck hes pretty good on those asot mixes

yes, technology is a good thing.
but i guess armin must be showcasing himself as an "artist", cause this kind of mixes don't have anything to do with DJing, imo.

Pretty much every dj does this now.

That's not necessarily a good thing.

I have it from a rather reputable source that ASOT 2006 will have 7 tracks from Anjunabeats artists, including 3 from Above & Beyond. The only confirmed one so far is Arksun - Arisen, which is honestly rather good.

Which means all you Above & Beyond haters can write off the CD 2 months in advance. It's not often I'll give you that opportunity.

Well shame on them
There will always be artists and djs who will continue doing it for the love of music.
Just have to dig a little deeper

It is when you are selling it for 15+ dollars. I'd like no trainwrecks or messups in my dj mix cd's, especially when I am paying more then I think I should be for them. When I go see the dj live, yeah... using a computer program could be a little too much for me to watch him do instead of interacting with the crowd and showing some true skill. Maybe this is why I am beginning to take less interest in PvD these days.

this should almost be another thread titled "Ableton live vs. TTs/CDJs" or "technology vs. talent" whatever you want to call it. But i'll weigh in...

If you want to really make use of Ableton, I think you should use it to not just mix tracks but add stuff to them, like Sasha. Rework the tracks, make them different. I mean Sasha seemed to work really hard on Involver. I didn't view the songs on ASOT 2005 as that different from the originals. Sure he made edits and changed things around slightly in tracks, but nothing significant. Technology is best used when it is utilized. Just making a mix on Ableton is boring. If thats all your going to do then all you should just use is MixMeister or Traktor, or just TTs or CDJs (even though with CDJs, there's so much more you can do, I haven't even utilized them yet because I'm still trying to get my beatmatching spot on with them, only have had them for 7 months, with not much practicing..been busy with school, but I want to explore the looping capabilities more and do some fancier stuff then just mix). Just my two cents..

it does'nt matter if PVD is using the PC or not... its his talent to mix the music & produce that makes him unique... Besdies why do people care so much about this if technology changes... i mean come on were in 2006 not 1975

If you want to make a professional mix cd using software what difference does it make in the software that you would prefer to use? A lot of you really aren't making any sense at all...

And sure he made that "megamix" thing but seriously, that's been done before, without the use of ableton. I recall a DJ called "too kool chris" making big megamixes back in the day (hard house, mixed with cheese), and so does Bad Boy Bill (with just hard and funky house). But I hate megamixes, and IMO aren't appropriate for trance music...
