A kind of exchange program, where students from different countries could study a couple of semesters somewhere else at the rate their paying in their home province?

Well thats very difficult to keep fair. I think that could work for all regulated tuition programs, but not deregulated programs.

Deregulated programs can charge whatever they see fit as mentioned above, and this will vary from one uni/college to another. That means that one student could go on exchange for less than another student based on what they were paying before, yet still be in the exact same program.

I guess it does work out the same.

Why would it be unfair? Universities in different countries strike deals with each other so that students will pay the same fees, thereby making it more appealing to study abroad.

i'm not saying its unfair. I think its great.

I was having an argument with some guy about how Quebec and France exchange university student and let them pay the fees in their respective province/country (quebec = 1000$/semester, France = 0$). That guy argues that students from other provinces should benefit from the same deal... which is impossible because tuition fees in Quebec are the cheapest in Canada.

your fees are only cheap if youre from quebec. Out of province students pay shit tonnes in quebec.

As an out of province student @ UotT it was 418.50 per 1/2 credit in arts and sciences.

our fees are cheap because our govt put education as a top priority, making the tuition fees heavily subsidized. Canadian students pay Canadian fees which are subsidized only by Federal money. International pay the full blown fee.

But for the Canadians who want to study at the low Quebec rates, all they have to do is stay in Quebec for 12 months before going to school or applying.

That's exactly how a student exchange works. I'm going to Australia for one semester but i will pay UofT tuition because i am enrolled in the exchange program through UofT and the schools have an agreement to take a certain number of exchange students. Otherwise, if i had to pay Australian tuition - you would not find me there - it is way too expensive to pay international student fees.

Keep in mind, "study abroad" is when you pay international student fees at the school you want to attend overseas because you are not part of the exchange program. Only through an exchange program at your home univeristy with their univeristy partners can you take advantage of studying at another school while paying you home school's tuition.

I don't get your friends agruement. If he wants other provinces to take advantage of Quebec's low tuition then those students should move to Quebec. And what same deal???

BTW Last year i paid $3500/semester for Engineering at UofT - depends what year you are in. I'm sure first year students are paying more than i am because every year tuition increases drastically for first year entry and then about $500 every year.

What's the most expensive undergrad program in Canada? Most I've heard is the nanotechnology program here at UW for 12k a year (6k a semester). pretty damn expensive but sounds cool
