if your going to play electronice play somthing Dark and hard. People that dont listen to electronica tend to not like floaty/epic trance. at least thats what i have noticed

E-type - This is the way
Daft Punk - One more time (Armand remix)
That Oakenfold remix of Madonnas "what it feels like for a girl"
The Village People - YMCA (Millenium Remix)
The song from the rave scene in the movie blade (I forget the name)

And some other crap that I do not remember.

One thing I found nice though was that both Lange - Follow Me and PVD - For an Angel were instant floor fillers.

Maybe there is still hope?

mm well it is 11 saturday night, so I am assuming the parties already started, but no need to worry, cause you all forgot the song that everybody knows, and many TA's hate, darude - sandstorm !! even the hip hop and pop crowd know that one, its a good one for a mixed crowd, maybe next time eh?

On the same note as the previous posts in this thread, I played a set of a few darker, faster trance tunes last night that worked pretty good. Remember that this was towards the wee hours of the night...not something to open with...=)

I played to following songs in order and the crowd really enjoyed it:

1. New Order - Confusion (get them on the floor with something they recognize)
2. Astral Projection - Axis (A curveball...still they liked it)
3. Astral Projection - Mahadeva (I know, I know...same artist in a row....hey, it worked)
4. Tomcraft vs. Sunbeam - versus

After playing these four songs the dancefloor was packed...Maybe I should have played "versus" before "mahadeva"...hmmm. Anyways, hopefully this will help someone who wants to introduce some darker, faster trance to the crowd. If you do not consider the above to be dark, fast trance please do not flame me...=)

Also, I notice that there are a lot of "how do I beatmatch this and that" posts in this forum. I think song selection is far more important. The crowd will forgive for not making a smooth, professional transition between songs. However, they will lynch you if you don't play songs they can dance to.

Man if your spinning infront of a cround that dosnt know shit about electronica then beatmatching dosnt matter. But if your playing for a crowd of paying party people then you better have your shit down. If i pay 25 bux for a party bad mixing isnt forgivable at all. Mixing can make the set just as much as track selection.

I am not going to disagree with you on that one. I hate a bad transition just as much as anyone else.

All I was trying to say was that if you miss a beat or two during the night I find that most people are fairly forgiving. I am ususally pretty good at beatmatching but I have to admit that sometimes the incoming song may run away from me for a few seconds, or vice versa.

Out of the two evils I think that is the lesser one. You may be able to make the transition between "can't touch this" and "ice, ice baby" sound like heaven, but the songs still suck the big one.

Also, please keep in mind that I play at a club where the audience think the remix of ABBA - Dancing Queen is progressive trance......so it's not like this big venue where people expect a demigod like PVD, where beatmatching may be king.

Again, just my two cents...

Take some Fatboy Slim and Moby.

Everyone has heard that stuff. The thing about parties is that people only like dancing to songs they know and recognize or songs that sound like songs they know and recognize.

Once again thanks for all your help!

I started off playing mainstream top 40 shite and everybody was just standing around so i put in some trance and things took off! We also had a huge Latin crowd attend so i played loads of Latin as well, but that's the only two styles that they ended up wanting, so it was a sweet crowd! Most of the people there were from Europe and South America, so that might have helped things...

Great party!
