I was born in Burton-Upon-Trent.

Burton upon Trent also known as Burton-on-Trent, or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England, which originally grew up around the monastery of St. Modwen. The town has a population of 60,500 (2001 estimate). It is the administrative centre for the East Staffordshire district.

For centuries, Burton has been associated with the brewing industry due to the quality of the local water. This comes from the high proportion of dissolved salts in the water, predominantly caused by the gypsum in the surrounding hills. Much of the open land within and around the town is protected from chemical treatment to help preserve this water quality.

The town is still home to five brewers:

* Coors, a brewery from the USA which produces Carling. Coors also brew Bass beer and Stones Bitter under licence from Interbrew
* Marston's, now owned by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries PLC
* Burton Bridge Brewery, a local company
* Tower Brewery, a new microbrewery
* Cottage Brewery, based in the Old Cottage Inn

In addition, the Bass Musuem of Brewing also continues to brew its own beer, separate from Coors.

A by-product of the brewing industry, figuratively and literally, is the presence of the Marmite factory in the town. This in turn generated the production of Bovril. Together with the breweries this can give the area a distinctive smell.

The development of rail links to Liverpool enabled brewers to export their beer throughout the British Empire. The accidental shipwreck of a cargo boat carrying India Pale Ale (an ale specially brewed to keep during the long sea voyage to India) resulted in barrels being washed ashore. The popularity of these fortuitous samples resulted in the domestic marketing of such ale, and began the gradual transformation of English drinking tastes.

Previously, Englishmen had drunk mainly stout and porter - dark beers flavoured with roasted barley and similar to Guinness - but bitter (a development of pale ale) came to predominate. This extensively hopped, lighter beer was easier to store and transport, and so favoured the growth of larger breweries.

Burton came to dominate this trade, and at its height one quarter of all beer sold in Britain was produced here. Although over 30 breweries are recorded in 1880, a process of mergers and buy-outs resulted in three main breweries remaining by 1980: Bass, Ind Coopes and Marstons. Today (2004) only Burton Bridge brewery remains as an independent brewer.

The fame of Burton ales gave rise to the English euphemism "gone for a burton" meaning to die — a World War II humorous suggestion that a missing comrade had merely nipped out for a beer.

The town's connection with the brewing industry is celebrated by a sculpture of the Burton Cooper, which is now housed in the shopping centre.

The town has a non-league association football club, Burton Albion who play in the Nationwide Conference. (SCUM!)

The Burton Operatic Society has existed since 1951 and is still flourishing.

The Burton suburb of Branston is where the well-known Branston Pickle was invented.

Claymills pumping station on the north side of Burton is a restored Victorian sewage pumping station, adjacent to the modern sewage works.

The town lies within the National Forest.

I spent a few months when Young living just outside Stratford upon Avon, famous for being the birthplace & home of William Shakespeare, but it's really posh & stuck up, we're from a mining background & they looked down their noses really badly at you, so we moved after 10 months there.

I was born in Brasilia, Brazil, and I still live here. It is the main city of the Brazilian Federal District, which is the capital of the country. It's the highest Brazilian city (1.000 km above sea level or something) and it's therefore, a very trippy city. Really, take a look at these buildings. That thing on the right is a (catholic) cathedral. On the left, you can see a picture of the National Congress (once used for a clip of the Belgian band Front 242). The city's modern architecture has inspired many, and was one of the reasons why Aeon flux was almost shot here (but there were a few technical problems).

I'm in a hurry, so I'm going to paste a few bits from Wikipedia, with a few comments:

According to legend, in 1883 the Italian priest Don Bosco had a prophetic dream in which he described a futuristic city that roughly fitted Brasilia's location. Today, in Brasilia, there are many references to this educator who founded the Salesian order. One of the main cathedrals carries his name. This is one of the reasons why Brasilia attracted so many hippies, who believe this is the future city of peace.

Anyway, President Juscelino Kubitschek ordered the construction of Brasilia, after a long-forgotten article in all republican constitutions to relocate the capital from Rio de Janeiro (they were all too lazy there ). Its main urban planner was Lucio Costa. Oscar Niemeyer was the chief architect to most of the public buildings and Roberto Burle Marx was the landscape designer. The city plan was based on the ideas of Le Corbusier. Brasilia was built in 41 months, from 1956 to April 21, 1960 when it was officially inaugurated.

From 1763 to 1960 Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil, and resources tended to be centred on the south east region of Brazil. Brasilia's geographically central location in the middle of the country made for a more neutral federal capital. The idea of placing Brasil's capital in the interior dates back to the first republican constitution of 1891, which roughly defined where the federal district should be placed, but the site itself was not defined until 1922. Brasilia's location would promote the development of Brazil's central region and better integrate the entire territory of Brazil. Conspiracy theorists say the real reason was to move the government to a place far from the masses.

It's a great place to live: it was very well planned, and it's impossible to get lost once you understand how it all works (although there are a few problems, due to the fact that the city planners expected communism to succeed in Brazil, and built a "communist city" for a non-communist state ). The city is also a musical reference, being considered the "Brazilian capital of rock music".

I like it here.
