Advertising is a portion of marketing, but both have vital departments to make the whole. Marketeing/Advertising has two basic fields, creative and sales. Creative is creates the marketing/advertising piece for some company which sales has sold/marketed the advertising too. Sales is the business side to advertising/marketing which also has it's umbrella of departments. actually making the sales (sales rep) analyzing/researching how the sales piece is doing against its competitors (market share percentages). same goes for the creative side, it also has it's own umbrella of positions - graphic artist, production manager, print associates. it really depends on where you want to go in school, although I do suggest the best application to any position is to learn business, even if you are fully creative having a business minor or MBA makes your creative touch a stronghold when you market yourself to potential employers.

i graduated with a bs in management in information systems, i've used my technical skills to help analyze business (minus the physical number crunching because i make the computer do it for me) and i'm currently going through the MBA process.

good luck oh yea and your future in corporate america has one sole creed - having a job in corporate america isn't about having to do hard work the work is really easy, having a job is learning to put up with people's bullshit...that is learning to deal that's what college should teach you

congrats! (i think lol)

when i think of "marketing" i think of the personal injury crowd (HUGE in south florida) and i think of all the pretty (slutty) women that the MRI companies and law firms hire as "marketing reps". they basically fuck all the attorneys and doctors to get business...no joke.

I like your answer. I'm a marketing major, but I ultimately want to get into advertising. Unfortunately the program at our school is geared towards the sales/PR aspect of marketing, rather than advertising. To illustrate my point, Personal Selling is a required class in the Marketing curiculum whereas Advertising is only an elective. I'm most likely going to grad school learn more about the ad industry.

Some more advice for BTG...advertising isn't just the "creative" part such as creating print ads or commercials. Account managing and media buying are very important functions in an ad agency, so you don't have to be a great artist in order to work at an ad agency.

If you cannot take direct advertising electives, you should definitely look for courses which teach you 2-D, 2-D, internet softwares like photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash and may be SolidWorks - this is more for engineers though.

Definitely try to get a good grasp on how they work. This way you build your pocket with resources to create advertisements and while you are working on it, you automatically tickle the creative part of your brain. This should directly affect both your advertising and creative skills and are very useful in the long run.

Advertising is a lot of fun man and you are right - its not all about just being artistic. My friend sorta works in advertising agency as a manager and his job is manage 20 creative artist or directors. Basically, he gets his money by reminding his artists to not get over creative and stick to the topic and still pass the idea.
Artists tend to go out of control at times.

The quantitative and strategic aspect of Marketing should also never be underestimated. Even if you're a creative person, this can be very difficult as there are just hundres and hundres of variables that affect the way a person purchases things. Identifying the ones that affect things in the market can be very difficult. I learnt this while doing a leading marketing simulation, Markstrat, in my maketing class, and what I didnt expect was the huge amouunt of market research and number crunching activities that were involved. There's just endless amount of information, and picking out which one is important is very difficult. Probably the most important thing I learn in the simulation is that of Customer Perception. Its ALL about how they percieve your product to be.
