Trip Hop is basically beats from rap with different types of vocals (non rap in most cases) and added instruments/sounds that seperate it from pure hip hop. its also downtempo in most cases.

Trip hop is my fave genre. I tend to enjoy more of the vocal works. As alot have already said, its hailed from Bristol and from there comes: Tricky.

For some uplifting jazzy vibes:

Anjali - Lazy Lagoon
Big Sur - Drummer

For that murky, dark trip hop:

Halou - Milkdrunk
Sunday Munich - Prozac
Archive - Nothing else

Oh well. Now you give a vague quote like that, I guess I'll ignore all the hip-hop I've heard.

well we're talking about general hip hop here. there are obviously sub genres of it. much like there are subgenres to trance. but most trance is associcated with the same formula (4/4, breakdown and whatnot). same goes with hip hop and mcing.

Yeah, which is why I said "not all hip-hop". Obviously it isn't true hip-hop, it's trip-hop!

Trip Hop

Trip Hop is a form of music originating in Bristol, England in the early 90's. It was originally called the 'Bristol Sound'. Its direct influences include the bassy murkiness from Dub Reggae, vocal stylings/real instruments from Lovers Rock, and sampling/cutting from Electro and Hip Hop. Trip Hop sounds like slow breakbeats usually with distorted/droning vocals and distorted sounds in general. Also if I remember right a lot of Trip Hop is bass heavy.

One of the very first artists, around 1989, to combine all this stuff to make what sounded a lot like Trip Hop was Jonathan Saul Kane under his alias Depth Charge. Artists known for making Trip Hop would be Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, and well...just read the thread.
