Trip Hop
Trip Hop is a form of music originating in Bristol, England in the early 90's. It was originally called the 'Bristol Sound'. Its direct influences include the bassy murkiness from Dub Reggae, vocal stylings/real instruments from Lovers Rock, and sampling/cutting from Electro and Hip Hop. Trip Hop sounds like slow breakbeats usually with distorted/droning vocals and distorted sounds in general. Also if I remember right a lot of Trip Hop is bass heavy.
One of the very first artists, around 1989, to combine all this stuff to make what sounded a lot like Trip Hop was Jonathan Saul Kane under his alias Depth Charge. Artists known for making Trip Hop would be Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, and well...just read the thread.
