It's sad but true that DJ's have to play tunes that they don't like. In some cases it's the tunes they have to play that fills up the dance floors. Other times their track list is dictated by record label managers...

I'm sure there's DJs and managers who act like that, but no truly music-loving DJ would play something he doesn't approve of, except if he's doing it for the money.
and if the tunes they play don't fill up the dance floor they're probably not doing their job very well, or they're playing in front of the wrong audience, eg you're not going to excite a nuskool breaks crowd with the latest floorfillers on Armada music, pun intended.


also, if you're a DJ and your tracklist is dictated by your record label manager, I'd suggest you pack your bags and find another label

That's pretty alternative DJing too.

All this talk about DJ's throwing records. No biggie, I smasehed a vinyl over my head to get the crowds attention back. I had a skip in the record right in the mix!. It caused me to trainwreck so bad I almsot kill the party with it. So when I took it off the table, I lowered the volume a bit so everybody could hear me shouting "Sorry, this record SUCKS!", and since I had their attentoin, I made up for it by smashing the vinyl over my head. That got those cheers and spirit high again

Sometimes I feel like Armin van Buuren does not enjoy what he is playing. This is because he really seems to put up a fake smile and energy on his face and play break beats. I remember 2 years ago in Toronto at decadence party...he started his set with Solid Globe - Sahara and then went on playing like 30 minutes of break beats.

I just know for a fact - thats not Armin's style.....he's the 'trackin treasure down' type guy.......and he is still awesome....Dunno whats with the continuous 5 hour fake smile though....its pretty funny...a guy nicknamed him laughing boy on some other thread...lol

Oakenfold hasn't been interested in what he's doing for years now. As soon as he got lotsa loot he stopped giving a damn. As for the general question, I'm sure that there are DJs out there who play stuff they don't like because there are a bunch of people out there who just wanna make money and get girls (and guys, too...for all you female DJs in the place).

That was a cd. It skipped so bad that he took it out, and threw it up in the air. Little did he know, there was a roof the to the booth... so it bounced into the crowd and hit somebody in the face...

I don't really agree with this. I've seen Armin play more times than I can remember and I've met him quite a few times and he really is into what he plays. Whether or not he's playing trance, breaks, electro, house...he plays records because he likes them. Just because he throws in some electro and stuff doesn't mean that he's just spinning it for the crowd's pleasure. I really believe he has a diverse taste in dance music and that's why you'll see him spin so many tracks that seem out of character for a trance dj. And as for his smile I think he's just kind of a dork...haha (no offense Armin). He always has that goofy grin, but I would be enjoying myself too if I was spinning in front of thousands of people every night. And he's not in it for the money either. There's a good interview with him on video that I have where he talks about how his booking agent doesn't tell him how much he's getting paid for his gigs(although I guess that doesn't matter now since he prolly makes an assload everywhere)and he does ASOT for free. So I mean I think it's pretty safe to say that he likes what he does and what he spins.

Yup. It supposedly hit a chick on the dancefloor in the face and cut her. He supposedly then claimed he would never play that track again. Now, how much of that is bs and how much is true is up for discussion.

lots of local openers play what pays, not their favorite genre...
