oh and maybe i'm stereotyping but whatever...

even when my boyfriend and i go out to the delicious "mom and pop" cuban cafes or steak houses, the servers hardly speak english and we get the shittiest service...they totally cater to all their other cuban "regulars" and it just completely ruins our dining experience. i think they avoid us because they're scared since they don't speak english that well.

maybe i wouldn't be as frustrated if i was fluent in spanish. but the principle side of me thinks it's ridiculous that i need to learn it in order to survive in miami.

Nevertheless, I think all immigrants should be put into a 8-week ESL course so they could at least grasp the basics and be able to get through every day life.

I agree. Let's run this country.

looking forward to your post lira.

Florida was discovered by Ponce de Leon. Therefore it shouldnt be surprising people don't care about english there. I think you should learn spanish.

That's a misused term. The proper term would be "mosaic of cultures". A melting pot is an area where all those different cultures merge together into one entity. For example; Montreal.

dominicans FTW! anyways, it is true that its a tad ridiculous for locals to have to learn another language to survive in their own comunities, but if you think about it, theyre is no "us culture" apart from consuming everything in sight and i think most people adapt to that one pretty easily. I think latin people are just being able to achieve way better what other groups have tried already, to keep their culture and injected into wherever they lived. The asians are to reserved to try it all out, and the europeans that moved over to the us in the past would rather isolate themselves, i just think latin people are more social and have the balls to try and socialize and keep their own stuff

i think part of the problem has been touched on in the thread. the immigrants that do come here dont want to assimilate to the culture and instead bring their culture and expect us to adapt/cater to them. but i guess the native americans feel the same way about us.

The grocery store where I do most of my shopping has everything in turkish so I sometimes have to guess what the products are but for the most part I have it quite well figured out. Perhaps these people aren't integrated ( they barely speak french actually ) but I don't care. They are working honestly so good for them!

Look around the world and everywhere there are little foreign colonies inside all the big cities.

A difference is that the "immigrants" here are actually trying or wanting to become citizens of the state, while in France and other European countries it is very hard to become a citizen. Most "immigrants' in European countries are not citizens nor try to be, rather they come in on a working visa or a foriegn workers program.

Isn't this part of what the riots in France were about? Poor foriegn workers feeling like they are getting the very short of end of the stick, partly because they weren't citizens?

Compared to most of the world becoming a citizen in the USA is easy.
