The killings happened. They weren't invented to increase his self worth, they were actually perpetrated as a means to affect his desensitized mind. Some of the details may have been invented, but he definitely killed a lot of people. Have you read the book? There's a scene in the book that I vaguely recall where Bateman is captured by a cab driver who recognizes him as the murderer of a fellow cabbie. All that the guy does, though, is rob him of his $800 gazelle skin wallet and i think his watch.

Also, American Psycho 2 with Mila Kunis absolutely blew, but it shows that the murders were real, as she's the survivor of one of his attacks.

BTW, the book is WAY more fucked up than the movie can even attempt to be. I have a pretty high threshold for being disgusted, but there's a passage with a rat that he's keeping as a pet and a victim of his that just disgusted me and i had to put the book down for a few minutes.

As both the book and movie were critiques of the selfish lifestyles and distorted values of the 80s, I took that part to mean that she actually had them removed. She looked very "knowing" in the scene, but my guess was that she just didn't want to have to deal with the police. Greed is a major part of the movie, and what broker wants to lose business because the apartment has been the scene of multiple murders? Especially with the values of the apartments that these guys kept. I mean, the deaths of the victims didn't affect her at all, and she wanted to keep it that way and not have them get between her and her broker's fee.

there's a passage in one of his other books, Glamorama, where a pregnant girl takes down a glass of champagne that has been spiked with some drug that forces her fetus to basically fall out of her, right there in her kitchen. just like you said, i was so disgusted that i had to close the book, and the imagery disturbed me for quite some time after that.

when i tell people about how disturbing some of Ellis' books are, they look at me like i'm crazy... but i think it's just excellent writing. if i can have such a strong reaction like that just from reading words on a page, i find it pretty impressive.

They did happen Groundhog Boy He was just in such a "high" and "respected" position, that everyone (even himself) will ignore the fact that these unspeakable things transpire. It's a satire on the rich and "well-off" people. It shows you that some of the worst scum on this planet have plenty of material wealth to back them up. I loved the critique.
