It makes me wonder if she had some sort of traumatic experience in her life....or has serious mental problems and uses religion as a fallback.

That is possible, although I'm not a psychologist so I'm not sure...but I usually find that if people were raised a certain way and from an early age a certain message was drilled into their head, it's very difficult to change
