I only started djing in september and two weeks ago I got a gig spinning at a bar in NYC every sunday. You don't have to work for free, just be persistant.
I can't really speak for england or other countries, but if you live in the states, you should be able to command a salary

that was like my first couple residencies, except for the fines and the whole roof caving in thing

$75-100 for 2-3 hrs and an unlimited bar tab on fridays and saturdays all summer long one year, so much fun... like the time i got trashed while playing, things got kinda hazy, madness probably ensued, came to my senses about 8am in the morning lying on a hammock in my friend's back yard with no recollection or any idea where ALL my gear was

everything turned out alright, my friend had shown up at the club just before close and helped me pack it up... more like packed it up and took it to my apartment for me

I had a weekly gig that lasted about 3 months down here in San Antonio. The resident would play cheese till midnight, I'd come in and play an hour of good stuff, then collect $150 and spend my drink tickets the rest of the night while resident played more cheese...those were the days.

Now I usually charge $50 an hour or 10 times the cover...whichever is more and depending on promoter.

My cousin plays regularly around Dundee in Scotland, twice a week he plays at a Drum & Bass or Techno night for 3 hours and he gets £75 for a nights work and free drinks all night for him and his friend.
If you want to make money in this business you need to show club promoters that you can fill the place. Thats what he has been doing, practising for years, starting off at underground raves and parties, then moving into a small pub that could hold 100 people. Soon 250 people tried to come and see him and have a good night in this smaller venue, for months he never charged an entry fee and all he got was £15 worth of drinks for doing 3 or four hours of DJing.
The whole time he was working in this tiny venue, he was making a DVD showing how his sets could fill a place twice or three times over.

Thats how you start, He'll only get bigger and bigger if he goes at the rate he's going.

Dj's should get paid if they've earned it.

and it doesn't need to be much if you're starting out, especially if the promoter is making money, no matter what, if people are profiting off your talent, you have to be compensated

for those who will dj for free, at least ask for gas money or bus fare if you don't drive

seriously, you don't have to play for free and you shouldn't lower yourself to having to pay out of your own pocket to drive to a gig

don't be naive, there's money

if there isn't, this obviously is a sketchy promoter and will only drag you down with him

burn cds, too many, give them to everyone... i mean everyone

that's the only way to get your name out there and put you in demand

cause if you're good enough the crowds will speak for themselves

and above all, contact info ON the cd

name, title, contact info

you'd be surprised on the cds i get without info that are decent but will never get a call

I would be very happy getting that much because then it could pay for the vinyl or mp3s i buy.
If djing as a hobby supported it self but i still needed another job to live i guess i would be happy.
If i could live comfortably as just a dj and or producer it would be a dream.
Im sure most would agree.

hell yeah

really?
I've never cued a set before, but I will now

I think it's a bit much to say they don't know much if they didn't cue it, but it can't hurt to throw it in
