Seriously, not everything preposed by a politition (other then harper... you like him right?) is an aweful invasion on your freedom. You need to look at things a little deeper, there are very good reasons for limiting this type of activity.... some of which have been mentioned.

Actually in most third world countries they ban panhandling but allow for people to sell stuff on the street unlicenced. Everything from newspapers in traffic, to pop, to kiddie toys. You name it.

In Canada we allow people to beg and annoy but the moment anyone tries to sell something we bust them for not having a permit or disallow them because they may be a hazard, annoyance, etc etc.

If someone is having a garage sale every day and selling next to new items obviously its a problem. But my parents used to have 4 garage sales a year. They were more about socializing than money. We would even have the bbq going and we gave out free food(im sure now there is some health dept law against that too)

We are getting so uptight in this society.

"OMG i can see his old plates out on his driveway! The world is endeing! And whats worse is that i had to pick up the flyer telling me about it from my mailbox! OH THE HORROR!"

And people ask me why i want to move

I just think there are better (less trashy) ways of running a business. It's kinda like some crazy cousin that shows up at all your family reunions trying to sell you knifes. It's just something I don't want to have to deal with in a residential neighbourhood. Yeah I'm a jerk sometimes.

LOL at least you admit it whereas most wouldnt LOL

I had a best friend in grade 7 and 8 whos dad got busted having a staff of 6 working at his house and they shut him down for more or less the reason that it was bringing in extra traffic into a residential neighbourhood. I think once you have built a business up to the point where you have consistent costumers you should move it into a commericial or mixed zoning district. Now if it's all online sales or something that doesn't bring in flocks of customers, I beleive that is a different issue and within the limits. I have also seen cases where calls come into the house but the costumers don't and that seems to be within the guidlines as well.

I could be slightly wrong on the home retail thing but this is my understanding of it legally.

That's kinda the point. But as long as you're selling junk, and not on a regular basis its ok?

no worries. It was in relation to something someone had said earlier, about not being able to make a living by having garage sales. I would think someone could do quite well selling art, or antiques, or tupperware, or phantasia, or ... in that manner.

I'm usually pretty good about admitting my own faults. If I'm wrong about something and someone can prove it to me I'm more than happy to admit it. Most of what I have learned has been because I've learned how to check my ego at the door when needed.
In this case I know I could be more tolerant in my views but I'm also never going to be the guy next door calling the cops on local kids.

...I may grumble about it and throw the occasional shoe at them to get off my lawn but thats about my limit*.

*(I wouldn't tell someone to get off my lawn unless they were leaving dog shit behind or it had just been reseeded then I may ask them polity not to walk on it for the next few weeks until it matures)

Don't be ashamed for what you believe in or how you feel though.

oh no I'm not ashamed at all. I just know where my stances line up with others is all I was saying by that. In comparison to Jayx1 for instance I could be a lot more tolerant about garage sales as businesses... but I'm not. I'm not ashamed of my opinions at all I just understand where they fit in regards to others thoughts.
