Negotiations are one of the most important aspects of my job. Being an adjuster handling bodily injury claims it all comes down to selling a number... trying to convice someone their injury is worth $x.

I find the best way to arrive at your desired number is to set that number ahead of time. Calculate exactly what you want the settlment to be well before you start negotiating. You will also need to figure out roughly what the other sides starting figure and bottom line will be. Chances are their bottom line and your acceptable top end figure will overlap. In order to get the number closest to where you want it you need to structure your offers (also ahead of time) to end up at the number you want. I will normally make my second offer only slightly higher then my opening position, my third offer will generally be a significant step upwards (to show I take their concerns seriously), my fourth offer will only be a slight improvement from my third and will be tabled with the caution that there is nearly no room to move (however, my fourth offer will generally be 75-80% of what I'm actually willing to spend).

Always be willing to walk away if the numbers get above your pre-determined top end.

One thing to remember is that different people are motivated in different ways. For some it's all about money but usually there are other needs that one is looking to satisfy through the negotiation. A lot of times it's the desire to be heard, feel important, appear effective/useful. If you can give some concessions to satisfy these non-monetary motivations you'll often realize a significant monetary savings in return. Subsequenly, you must know your opponent.

Always remember.... if both sides walk away unhappy with the deal then the negotiations were a success.

when it comes to electronics and stuff from best buy/futureshop, just do what I do... find a friend that works in one of these places.

not only will they hook you up with the lowest possible price on any item in store (if it's not in their department, then they will talk the guy who works in that dep't down to whatever the lowest price is), but they will also keep you updated on when some great deal rolls around, some employee only sale or some ridiculous discount is on.

Smaller mom&pop stores, you can haggle more. Big Box stores are generally firm.

Future Shop
When the salesguy punches in your purchase, there's a code at the bottome of the screen indicating the store's profit. But I can't say anything further.
